Remington 700 DBM options?

Hi all,

I'm looking for some advice on a DBM for my Remington 700 .223

Its in an HS precision stock in decent condition. I don't mind having it inletted, other than I have no idea what that would cost or what kind of turnaround to expect. I did ask Ellwood Epps and was given a ballpark of around $150 (without them seeing it they said they couldn't say for sure)

That said, I would much prefer a "drop in" option.

The fact that its a .223 is presenting a bit of a problem compared to whats available for other calibers.

So far I know of 2 options that drop in with no inletting. Legacy Sports and Wyatt.

Legacy sports are very reasonably priced, carried by 1 or 2 site sponsors. but they're plastic. and I can't seem to find a .223/ SA conversion kit. i found a mag but no kit.

Wyatt are a bit more money but metal and seem to have a good rep.

Magpul makes a cheap one but .223 mags are an issue would need to be sourced elsewhere, and inletting is required.

I looked into mystic precision, who said they have some but they require inletting too.

Any others i should consider?

What should inletting cost on a 700 HS precision stock and where is a good place to have it done?

Anyone ever inletted a stock themselves? Doable?

AICS makes a 223 magazine in 10 round format. And so does MDT in the polymer format, my son has a couple of them for his MDT LSS chassis’ed TAC SPS .223 with 16.5” barrel. I’m a firm supporter of the AICS magazine format. Yeah it’s a single stack format but it’s proven & has been around a while.

The chassis systems for the Savage and Remmy 700 bolt guns have been around for many years and the makers seem to have tweaked all the bugs out of them and that’s encouraging.... :cool:

At least with your current stock in its unmolested status can fetch a decent return along your upgrading - to - chassis journey

Good call. I will take a good look into that as an option. It makes sense to go that route.
 
How about the Magpul DBM for their "Hunter" stocks. Yes, it's polymer. Yes, it may require some inletting. Yes, it uses AI style magazines. Yes, IT"S 1/3 THE PRICE OF ANY OTHER OPTIONS
 
The other option is you could sell the HS Stock (they are fairly popular still on the EE) for about 250-275 depending on condition and then pick up either a KRG Bravo or Magpul hunter stock.

The Hunters are OK but I just received a Bravo last night from a site sponsor (to give away at a match so I don't get to keep it) and I must say it is quite nice. It has adjustable LOP with spaces and an adjustable cheek piece. It has a nice vertical grip and am 90% sure a piece or pic rail in there if you run a pic style attachment.

The Bravo is $525 from Go Big Tactical currently.

If you inlet say that is $150 and then buy the PTG Bottom metal (the M5 footprint is the standard and is $130 USD) say $160. That is about $310 total.

Buy the Bravo for $525 and sell the stock for even $300 and you are about the same.

Edit: Just checked and it looks like the HS is going for ~$300 these days.
 
I have a remmy 700 in .308 and years ago got a badger ordinance dbm kit for it. $450 at the time and had a local guy do the inletting $200. I'm very happy with how the whole thing turned out.
But if I were to do it again, would probably get a whole new chasis system and be done with it.
 
I just heard back from Wolverine and they can get the Legacy Sports one. Dirt cheap & drop in. It uses proprietary mags, but they have decent reviews. Should run under $200 with a mag or 2 (my guess not a quote from them.) They're polymer, but I can live with that.

I'll save the high end stuff for when I get a one .308...

I dig my stock, and for my purposes (occasional plinking at the range) I'm not going to modify my receiver just for detachable mags. Inletting the stock is one thing, modifying the gun is not for me right now. (resale value, etc.)

I will update once I get the kit and tell you how it is.

Otherwise I'd probably go the chassis route. I just dont want to invest a ton more into this rifle. Detachable mags are probably the last piece to the puzzle. I got too many other guns on my wish list!!!
 
I've done PTG stealth on a sav10 hs precision and an atlasworx on a 700 w B&C.

No special skills other than patience, dremel, sandpaper and willingness to suffer the consequences of my actions.

Patience is the most important when DIY. Sand test fit. sand and test fit. sand and test fit.

Both are great IMHO. (pats my own back)
 
Atlasworx aics conversion for Rem SA. Very reasonably priced for cnc alu. Also MDT plastic 10 shot mag works a treat. We only use Atlasworx for our stocks.

I ran two PRS competitions with one of these, worked well for the dollar but not perfect. The kit comes with either a 10 or a 5 - I found the 5's feed great (I ended up buying three) while the 10 wouldn't pick up anything past the 6th round. It looks like there's a patch w/in the mag body that stands proud and holds up the follower. Was planning to run it again this summer but the magazine release split where the cross pin goes through so... yeah.

If you do buy one, PM me for magazines. I'm going to a KRG chassis so these will just sit in the junk bin.

The Legacy DBM I had for a Howa 1500 in .308 worked fine until the plastic split where it was fuzed together. Legacy wouldn't respond to emails and I ended up throwing it in the trash and selling the mags. But it fed beautifully until then. Its made by ATI which tells me everything I need to know about it.
 
I’m just about ready to type up a post about this new MDT 13 rounder and I thought I should add it here.

Here is the 13 rounder right next to a Magpul AICS 10 rounder:

Almost the same size.... longer mags are a pain to change magazines with a very low prone or 6” bipod position.

I found a reasonable amount of magazine slack after loading 13 rounds .... most necessary when inserting a full 13 round magazine on a forward bolt thus allowing a 13 plus 1 situation... :cool:

There you go...AICS pattern for the win...and MDT is Canadian!!

I have the Badger M5 on a McMillan A5 stock with AI mags and it's a great piece of kit. Very expensive though.

Own a couple HS Precision stocks that need DBM. In a way the Badger setup s kinda silly on something like a B&C or HS Precision because it's a fair bit more than the stock ! However, it works so bloody well why mess with it..... so, saving pennies to put same on other rigs.

I'd like to try the Magpul DBM on a B&C or HS Precision though to see how it works out. Can't warm up to the Magpul stock no matter how often I try, nor am I a fan of chassis's no matter how ninja cool they are.

Alright, So I got the Legacy Sports DBM kit. First Ill say that Wolverine's service was awesome! It was my first time dealing with them and I will be going to them as much as I can in the future.

The DBM was...meh. It fit. It worked. But it felt very...Fragile. I have sent it back and will likely be exchanging it for the Magpul conversion kit. I don't want to drop a ton of cash into this rifle so I'm going to stick with the cheaper options.

It seems a few others have managed to inlet their stocks and modify the mag well slighly with success (youtube). Im confident I can pull it off without ruining anything. I will be focusing on making it as neat and tidy as possible.

This should keep me in the same price range for a DBM kit and AICS .223 mag give or take.

Just thought I'd update. Once I get it in I will post a pic. (unless I butcher it lol)

PS where is a good place to get the .223 aics mags? i saw bullseye has some polymer ones for about $40. is that reasonable?
