There are two types in three sizes....
Sizes: 222 family, Std and belted mag
Types: Riveted, used from 1962 until phased out in 1983, and re-introducted and currently in use for the belted mags and the rivetless, which is held in place by spring action.
Re: changing to a Sako, don't! The stock Rem extractor is part of the three rings of steel, originally developed for an autoloading rifle that was never introduced to the market. The extractor, Patent # 2,473,372 issued to John D. Howell on June 14, 1949, is contained within the bolt face and made possible Mike Walker's enclosed breech system, Patent # 2,585,195. This mass produced extractor is so simple, strong, and effective that it has been remarked that "Paul Mauser must have turned over in his grave on the day it was put into use."
As others have said, a sako extractor as a mauser extractor, can become a missle!!
Re: bolt gas port, it is considered non-functional from a design standpoint or cosmetic and not needed since gas will escape along the raceways if needed. "The excellent design of the 700 practically eliminated any gas in this part of the receiver. Should any gas make its way into this area, it would likely travel laterally past the port and out the open lug raceway."
From The Remington 700 book by Lacy, as is the pic or the extractor and bolt faces..
