I have a well-used Remington 700 in .222 Magnum that dates from about 1963. The second time I had it at the range the extractor broke and fell out of the bolt face. Now, how the previous owner(s) managed to make it work as long as it did is a bit of a wonder, because I have looked at the bolt time and again and it looks to me like the original extractor was never riveted into place. In fact, I can see no indication that the bolt was ever drilled to take a rivet. I compare the bolt to my late 80s vintage 700 in .222 Remington and they are definitely different styles, and a modern rivetless extractor isn't properly retained in the old bolt. So it seems to me the bolt was definitely intended to take the riveted extractor, it just was never properly riveted into place.
So now, what are the options? Brownells has the riveted extractors for cheap, so I could stick with the original design, I would just need a 'smith who could accurately drill the hole and install the rivet.
I could go the infamous Sako extractor modification. The parts cost about 10 times as much, I have no idea if finding a good gunsmith to do this work would be easier or harder than finding one to do the rivet.
Any other options? Any suggestions on what smiths might be good choices for the work? I am in Edmonton, and someone local is always a plus.
