Remington 700 Police or 700 5R Milspec

I am new to precision shooting and am looking for a firearm to purchase. I believe that I am down to the Remington 700 series but uncertain as to whether it should be a 700 P or a 700 5R Milspec. Any thoughts from this forum? Thanking you in advance for some input.

It all boils down to esthetics, because they yield the same results. I personally like the SS action on the 5R rifle. It will make a great rifle for learning and later upgrading too. One does not shoot better than another, and mechanically they are identical.
 
I went with the milspec, for no other reasons then I think it looks nicer, and it is kinda cool to have a rifle not on remingtons website.

Just so I can be the first to say in this thread...Neither. Buy a Stevens 200. ;) Just kidding...Don't do that.

I'd go with the 5R myself. Shortly before the stainless 5R came to Canada I built a project arround a stainless 700 SPS action, a Mike Rock 5R M24 contour 26" barrel, and a 700P stock.

If the 5R was available at that time I more than likely would have purchased it instead.

Both rifles are potentially very accurate with no real advantage one way or another. The 5R may prove easier to clean based on what others have claimed. My Mike Rock is without a doubt the easiest to clean barrel of all I own.
 
I also went with a 5R in the end. The two main reasons were:

1) The stainless action and barrel. Everything still needs to be cleaned and taken care of but there is a lot less worry about rust and long term exposure in wet environments.

2) Barrel has a faster twist. Not a lot faster than the standard, but most people’s experiences show it does make a difference. The gun handles most bullets very well, and the heavier bullets much better, which I think is great for hunting different animals.

I have not handled a 700P, but I did have an SPSV. The 5R was definitely better finished. Everything was smoother and tighter. It was very noticeable.

I consider this to be a very good write up on the 5R. It does not play into the whole mystical M24 magic as much as some other reviews tend to do:

I own a Remington 700P and shoots very precise, the action is the smoothest action I have ever handled on a bolt action rifle. The bull barrel really makes a difference when it comes to recoil.

The Remington 700P is often harder to get your hands on since it was first manufactured only for police and law enforcing troops. Overall thats not something you should look at but the one that fits you best.

Sorry, you're wrong. 700P's have been available in plentiful numbers for many years. If Remington wanted to forbid civilian sales, it could easily do so through dealer/distributor agreements. Obviously, that isn't the case.

I am not saying they're not available. Its that at first they werent made for "citizen use". They were made for security officials and higher standards were set I expect since they were ment to be used to protect lives. Now they are available in many places but still not as easy to pick up. I went to the local gun store 2 weeks ago, out of curiosity I asked them about the Rem 700P. They told me that they do not carry that rifle but could order it for me, they said it would take some time as well.

Have you checked the EE for 5R's? There are always a few of them for sale used , plus a couple of our sites sponsors have them advertised on a continuous basis. Not so the P or LTR
 
[Yeah, to be completely honest, that made me more nervous buying the 5R!... if so many people are getting rid of them.... ;) ]

I was only saying 'in my opinion' as in I've bumped into more 700P's than 5R's. Altho TO ME it seems like the 5R's getting a lot more common over the last year. (completely just off my limited opinion)
 
I have a 700P in 223/556 it has done .25 and a 700P in 308/762 which has done .4 , my advice is to get hands on with both and then go from there, not a big fan of the stainlessbut thats just me

I think both rifles have a pretty loyal following for each of them. There's gotta be a reason for it.
