Hey guys, I was in CT to check out a Remington 700 SPS in 7mm REM.... I had plans to get one of these and replace stock with Boyds.... question is, what kind of coating is on the barrel. Its not blued or satin finish. I have a satin finish barrel on my CDL and it is smooth and well finished. This thing looks like it was very roughly coated with something granular, and it scratched with the slightest run of my nail on the barrel. Any guesses. Not going to buy it if I'm going to have to strip it down and get it blued. Found it very odd, checked another SPS in the case and it had the same barrel finish

That's Remington's "black oxide" finish.

It's "tactical", so that when operators operate operationally they'll be able to do so tactically.

I've had SPSs, but between the Tupperware stocks, and the lack of finishing I just don't think theres enough savings to buy another. Scrape up a couple more bucks and you won't have to restock it.

The SPS makes a great 'core' for a custom gun done cheaply or use the action for a full build.
Fact is most of them shoot very well.....it's actually not very expensive to have the barrelled action blasted to remove the oxide finish then parkerize it for a base of your choice of coatings or leave it park'd......if you want polished bluing, that would be a waste of time with the sps.

I have no problem with the rem 700 SPS, and prefer the steel action for a build, I believe the stainless barrel mates better with the steel action, when threading it together, (as stainless on stainless tends to gall). The SPS actions are my choice for a build if I'm not considering a custom $$$.
Enjoy
