Remington 700 SA rebarrel options

I'm shooting a used McGowan HV contour 24" 7-08 on a Savage 11 action in a B&C Medalist stock RB trigger and 25MOA Farrel rail...

A max load of H4350 and a 162gr Amax are tickling on 280 Rem territory, I started with 100 Winchester cases match prepped and neck turned for cleanup, I have 6 reloads on 20 cases and still tight pockets, the rest of the cases are 2x fired and I lost 1 to a split neck.... Next barrel (if I ever wear this one out) will probably be a quite similar to this one.

Recoil.... This rifle weighs in approx 14lb's with my Siii 8-32x56... Never had er on the scale but that's my guess anyway... When you touch off a round you know it's not a .223, recoil is there, it's ample for a small cartridge, that's the trade off with shooting a heavy bullet, read "no free lunch"... That said I can shoot it alllll day long with no ill effects if i could muster up enough ammo to keep me going steady for a day...

7-08 is a wonderful LR cartridge, shooting heavy bullets opens a lot of door's with it and it retains enough punch to be an extremely effective pest control round and dare I say it... "Longer" range hunting round given a proper bullet and some serious thought to retained energy and size of targeted animal...

700 meters to the moose, 6"x5" group approx, the rifle can do better than me that's for sure...

Thanks hotwheels, I'm really thinking of getting a 7mm barrel, and trying out something in the 32" range. It's funny that you mention you shoot a McGowan barrel, I was looking at McGowan's site and priced out a 32" contoured octagon fluted barrel that was chambered and it came to 680usd. It would be so cool to show up at a range with a Remington 700, that barrel in an old beat up wood stock and pull off some awesome groups, would have an old school vibe to it, and be an easy conversation starter lol

Take your time, pick and choose what you want and go from there... If your not shooting in a sanctioned event then it really opens up lots of options...

Like I said if I got another barrel it would be very close to this one... But fluted... And AI with a tighter neck... And maybe in a magnum contour instead of the HV to shed a little bit of weight...

Too many choices! Lol

I probably won't be seeing any sanctioned events, life is just too busy to schedule shooting events atm, and will be for another 5 years lol. I'm pretty sure I'll get a MDT lss-xl chassis, I've always wanted one haha. Whatever caliber I choose, I am not stuck with it, I can always get another barrel in a different caliber.

I'm also planning on taking the original barrel and try fluting it. I'm worried about stress relieving and warpage, but I'll do a bit of research beforehand to see what other people do, if anybody has input on milling on a barrel, please feel free to chime in.

From what I've read on fluting the cons greatly outweigh the pros. Many shops that offer barrel fluting don't have the equipment to properly stress-relieve the barrel afterwards. Fluted barrels cool off faster, but there's less material so they also heat up faster in the first place. Fluted barrels are less rigid to a barrel of the same diameter (again, less material) and new findings indicate that fluted barrels deflect more when heating up. If you read this article from the excellent Precision Rifle Blog the author goes into quite a lot of detail, citing a data-driven experiment performed by Accuracy International on the matter. You'll have to scroll down a ways to get to the bit about fluting.
