madtrapper, almost ALL litigation is settled out of court. In fact, if the plaintiff and the defendant are rational people with rational lawyers they should ALWAYS settle out of court. Going to court is expensive and simply transfers money to lawyers that could have been split up between the defendant and the plaintiff. The longer you spend in court, the less money there is to divide. In most cases the two sides soberly assess their chances of winning and then come to an agreement that generally reflects what will likely happen if they fight it--but for far less money going to the lawyers.
As a result saying "the vast majority of cases never go to trial" is a completely meaningless and empty statement. We don't know WHY they didn't go. It could be the cases were all without merit and Remington was simply paying them off to avoid going to an expensive trial. Equally, it could be every one of those cases was rock solid, and Remington paid them off to avoid going to an expensive trial.
At the end of the day it is a rare event that serves as a reminder to control your muzzle direction at all times.
