Remington 700 Safety issues

The program is still running. The man who designed the trigger say's there is a flaw. Those who shot their limbs off or killed someone should not have had their rifle pointed in that direction.

Early in production he pointed out to Remington what he felt was a flaw in the design, the manufacturer (Remington) did not feel it was a flaw in design and produced many millions of them... it did not prove out to be a flaw in design.

In regards to the insurance settlements out of court. Remington did not "pay off" anyone. In the modern litigation world bean counters determine what costs more, fighting a plaintiff claim or paying an out of court settlement. If it is cheaper to pay the plaintiff that's the route they take. Rarely right or wrong has anything to do with it.

madtrapper, almost ALL litigation is settled out of court. In fact, if the plaintiff and the defendant are rational people with rational lawyers they should ALWAYS settle out of court. Going to court is expensive and simply transfers money to lawyers that could have been split up between the defendant and the plaintiff. The longer you spend in court, the less money there is to divide. In most cases the two sides soberly assess their chances of winning and then come to an agreement that generally reflects what will likely happen if they fight it--but for far less money going to the lawyers.

As a result saying "the vast majority of cases never go to trial" is a completely meaningless and empty statement. We don't know WHY they didn't go. It could be the cases were all without merit and Remington was simply paying them off to avoid going to an expensive trial. Equally, it could be every one of those cases was rock solid, and Remington paid them off to avoid going to an expensive trial.

At the end of the day it is a rare event that serves as a reminder to control your muzzle direction at all times.

I can make anything malfunction. Now having a malfunction and it blows your leg off is truly something more than a malfunction...it's poor weapons handling.
I never rely on a safety feature on a firearm. The 700s are a rugged realiable shooting iron and I never had a problem. I always function test after tuning a trigger mechanism.
Hair triggers will cause issues on any action.
