Remington 700 SPS DM

Looks like I may be getting this rifle for a grad present. I've taken a look at it, and it seems pretty nice. It would be my first large cal. rifle, so I'm wondering what you guys think about it as a starter rifle. I'd be getting it in 30-06 and putting a Leupold VXII or VXIII 3-9x40mm or a Bushnell 3200 3-9x40mm scope (depending on funds at the time), a Rock Mount bipod and a Browning x-cellerator sling. Does this sound like a good setup? I'd love to hear your opinions, suggestions, ideas. Thanks.

Go with a tikka t3 instead in 30-06. I think alot of people here will vouch that overall you get more bang for your buck with a tikka over a remmington. Your gonna have to get a gunsmith to work on the trigger and maybe even bed it to get the accuracy the t3 will deliver out of the box. The bolt on the remmington is pretty bad when compared to the tikka. Hell, I'd take a savage action over a remmington one anytime.

I have a 3200 on mine and it works fantastic. I also have a rock mount bipod and a butler creek comfort stretch sling. Great setup imo!
 
I own two of those SPSs (30/06 & 270).

I'd stay away from the DM and just go with the BDL style as there are MANY aftermarket add-ons out there that will bolt right onto the BDL.

A VXII 2x7 Leupold and a set of Talley LW mounts will save weight right off the bat. Down the road with a fiberglass stock, you can get that rifle down to about +/- 7lbs.

This is an excellent scope. I want a Remmington 700 BDL in 30.06. (I want the iron sights)

What's the difference between available aftermarket parts between a Detachable Mag and a Floorplate type magazine?
 
I for one prefer the factory remington detachable mag to aftermarket units such as the kwik klip.I also feel that the elite 3200 offers much better value for the price than a vxII.
 
congrats on your first rifle. ive owned 3 SPS now, .270 win, 7mm rem mag, and 300 ultra. all of them functioned flawless, and gave great accuracy. the Tikkas stock felt more like tupperware than any SPS by remington. but the bolt is smoother on the tikka. More weight to the remingtontons than tikka which is better with recoil.


plus i think remingtons are just plain better looking than Tikkas. but thats my opinion. get out there and handle more than just a remington or a tikka, and make your first big gun purchase a good one.:canadaFlag:


as for scopes, i was a huge fan of the Elite 3200 and Elite 4200, but recently been bitten by the Leupold bug. i will be putting a Leupy on my .458 win mag, but i think i will continue to purchase the Elites over Leupold after that for other rifles, not because thier more affordable, but because i dont shoot guns everyday, i dont compete, im a average weekend warrior hunter and the Elite series are a great value for what you pay. havent broken one yet or lost a zero.

I fondled one at the gun store...very nice, but i went with the LSS.

Here's the thing:
I felt the action on a Tikka T3. The bolt moved very smoothly compared to my 700.
BUT as soon as I put a couple boxes through the 700 and cleaned it when it needed it, the bolt moves just as smoothly, so...


700 actions are not horrible like many would like you to believe, and many custom rifles have 700 actions.

I would look into a Tikka T3 as a secondary rifle. Only problem is you can't top load it.
If you want a great bang for the buck, T3 lite is it.
However I like my Remington and don't think you would go wrong with an SPS DM either. :cool:

I had a SPS DM long enough to function test it. Everytime I worked the bolt all the cartridges flew out the top. This speed unloading feature didn't impress me much, so it went back to WSS unfired to swap for a floorplate model. My kid's shooting the hell out of it, which is what I got it for. If a detachable mag is important to you the plastic inline mag of the Tikka works flawlessly, and it has a better trigger. I've got both rifles, several Remingtons in fact.
I've also owned the scopes you listed, and frankly wouldn't use a 3200 for a tent peg. Pay a few extra bucks and get something good.
 
I own one Remington 700 detachable mag system,and my hunting partners own five more between them for a total of six.All function perfectly.I own two 3200s and between my hunting partners,they own three more for a total of five.All have been trouble free.
 
I have had 3 SPS (non detachable mags) and two Tikkas. The Tikkas are a nicer rifle all around. They have perfect triggers, all my remingtons needed work. The tikkas feed flawlessly, even in 300 WSM, if feeds much smoother than my SPS in 30-06. The bolts on the Tikka is smoother than the Remington. I have nothing against the SPS, I just think the Tikka's are a better rifle. Both Tikkas were more accurate out of the box and they are more than a pound lighter.

ipicked up the stainless camo version from SIR last fall, harris bipod, sling and a buschnell legend scope, way to nice really, almost as nice as my savages :redface:
 
Thanks for the info guys. Bunch of different reports and that's good to hear. For some reason i'm not a fan of the Tikka rifles. Just seem too chintzy, and as one guy put it "like tupperware" . Especially the T3 lite. I also don't really like the looks of them. I think the only T3 i really like is the T3 tactical, but i haven't handled that one. that's just looking at pictures, and it's a way outta the price range for now. I'm more of a matte blued barrel fan than stainless, part of the reason i looked at the SPS. The detachable mag is kinda important, mainly cause I like being able to just clip another mag in, rather than have to load the rifle round after round till it's full. Guess we'll see how mine will handle, since it worked well for some, and not so well for others. Thanks again.

I'd take a gander over at Savage then.
 
I have owned an SPS in .270 and Tikka T3 in a 270 wsm and did prefer the T3 but the SPS is an excellent choice and has the option of being accessorized w/ all the aftermarket products.
I would not loose any sleep going w/ a 3200 over any Leupold. Great scopes, good value. If it breaks (which is not likley) go buy another and you still be well under what you'd pay for for a VX II not to mention the overpriced VX III.

Sounds like a great choice...I'd make mine a Stainless 30-06 BDL (floorplate).

I find the Rem DM clunky, and a tad sloppy.

As for optics... the VXII is hard to beat (better eye relief and lighter than the Elite).

If you think a Tikka is chintzy compared to a Remington then you definitely deserve the Remington.:p
There is absolutely no comparison in quality or function the Tikka wins both hands down.:eek:
Hope you enjoy your new Remmy. Maybe you can give it to your son when he graduates... if it lasts that long.;)

P.S.The Bushnel Elite 3200 does not hold a candle to a Leopold VXII. But it is certainly good enough for an entry level Remington.:popCorn:

I've used the Elite 3000...3200...4200...all Great for the price !! and none have broken, and if they do, Bushnell has an Great warranty and will send you back a new one asap. I had a Bushnell Trophy years ago that I used for 10yrs till it broke ( probably my fault after banging it against a cpl trees) and Bushnell sent me a new elite 3000 as a replacement no charge. You cannot go wrong with that. And the 4200's now have a "No questions Asked one year trial replacement policy"
