Hey guys,

Looking to possibly pick up a Remington 700 sps tactical in .308 but have heard of some reoccurring issues that are of concern.

Can anyone comment on the short/long term problems associated with the Hogue Overmold stock touching the barrel when a bipod is used as well as the issues surrounding the optic mounts being drilled poorly?? Any other issues are welcome to be posted as well along with the positive findings.

Im sure this has been asked time and time again but any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Rock Out

My son and I both have one. Neither rifle has any problems with the holes for the scope bases.

The Hogue stock actually feels good in hand, as in for field carry and offhand shooting. The flexibility of the stock makes it a bit difficult to shoot well, you have to be careful to be totally consistent with pressure on the stock.

One thing that bothers me is that the rubber coated stock doesn't slide back on recoil properly , it tends to pull the bag off the shooting rest. So I cut a strip of smooth finished leather and punched a hole in it so the leather fits over the detachable sling swivel mount. Then the smooth leather sits on the bag and the rifle does slide over the bag during recoil.

Thanks for the input Shooter!! Its seems like it should be a good rifle and the price is definately right. My only concern is buying a POS which a remington shouldnt be but the reviews ive been reading about their lacking quality control have me wondering.

The other rifle im considering is an NEA AR-15, 14.5. Two totally different platforms I know. Decisions decisions!!

Your going to need both.... just sayin'. :D

I have had mine over a year shoots like a hot dam. Not a single problem. Intook my dremel to the barrel channel at the end of the forearm cause it would touch. Other then that I have put over a 1000 rounds through it and thing that upset me is when I haven't shave in a while and my hair get pulled against the stock during recoil

I like the way you think Kona!! If zombies attack I could use long and mid range rifles :)

I know for a few hundred I can pick up a Bell & Carlson stock that would eliminate the stock issue but id rather put that money towards some quality optics that I wont be itching to replace a few months down the road!!

Damn expensive hobbies lol

Thanks for the advice!! Im still deciding on what to get. I would honestly probably go for an NEA 14.5 right now if it didnt mean actually getting it mid 2012 the way things are going lol!

I had the 700 SPS Tactical 20"bbl in .308 and now have the .223 version... only because it's cheaper to shoot paper with.
Neither rifle had issues mounting a scope mount. Both ran great.
Yes the bbl would touch the stock when the rifle was rested on the bi-pod but I don't think it's enough to affect accurracy. YMMV
I kept mine simple. Installed a Badger oversized bolt, Harris bi-pod and a Bushnell fixed 10x Tactical scope.

For the money you spend on one you can do a lot worse.

The SPS Tac shoots the worst off a bipod; better off sandbags. What I did was shim up the action in the front with 4 shims cut out of a pop can. Accuracy got noticably better, worth a try. The gap between the fore end and the barrel is now noticably bigger.
