hey fellas, new to the site not sure if this is the right thread area to post but anyway I am really interested in the Remington 700 sps tactical. short bull barrel and have some questions before I purchase the rifle. I have seen lots of youtube on this rifle shooting 850+ yards and that's around where I wanna shoot.Oh its the .308 cal btw. is that 20" barrel capable of shooting that distance? or should I get a longer barrel? problem is I believe that sps with the grippy stock only comes in the 20" barrel. Sooo ya if anyone can give me any info on this firearm it would be much appreciated. thanks B

Both my "precision" rifles have 20" inch barrels, lots of discussion on the net about the pros & cons, however for me the 20" is G2G. If you're sure you're shooting longer ranges, take a look at the REM SPS AAC model, it has a 1/10 twist barrel to stabilize the heavier bullets.

Wrong forum ... Precision rifle forum !

The sps tac is capable of shooting 800 yards but Remington has better options in a m700 for long range work , the main Dow fall of the sps tac is the stock is of low quality and only hurts the accuracy of the rifle Remington makes heavy barrelled m700 with h&s precision stocks and bell and Carlson stocks such as the m700p or the m700 xcr long range tactical
If you are just looking to get started and work up to long range by slowly investing more and more money the sps tac is a good choice but you will want a new stock on it before you know it !

My best 5 shot group yesterday, with my SPS Tactical in .223 at 100 m was about .630". As has been said, the stock is the weak point, you have to be very careful about what pressure (cheek, trigger hand on grip, forend) you put on it or groups will open up fast. If you want to shoot precision on a budget I would suggest a lightly used Rem 700P or Rem 5R. The SPS Tactical is easier to carry in the field than the 700P or 5R and the stock is very comfortable to hold for offhand or braced shooting in the field.

I watched a portion of a youtube series on this rifle, Bell & Carlson have a replacement stock that's inletted for Surgeon bottom metal and addresses the weak factory stock.

ok thanks everyone. Mildot I don't think I can get that in Canada can I? that's the one with the supressor right? I do like that one a lot but as long as I can reach out with a 20" barrel I think ill getter. thanks!!

You can get the AAC model, it's threaded for a suppressor that's it. It has the 1-10 twist barrel which is a selling point for the rifle. Watch the youtube video's 1-6 from Budget Precision by 8541 Tactical. good video;

I have the Rem 700 SPS AAC in 308 and trust me there is no suppressor in that box lol. Great rifle, just waiting on my AICS stock.

I wish it came with a surpressor.

Only comes with a threaded barrel but makes for the addition of a muzzle brake easy if you choose to.

I've shot mine at 1000 no problem. Nothing concrete about barrel length which means the benefits are 1-10, and shorter heavy barrel making it easier to fine tune load.

I got a pair of the 16.5" versions, one in .223 and one in .308. Just waiting on some rings to mount my glass.
I think the Hogue stock will be fine after some bedding and forend stiffening with some resin.

I'm not sure what barrel length is but its a sps in 308 and with a lebaron card it came out to about 550 ... 1500 for the total setup. And if I do my part it will shoot 1/3 moa at 100 middle to middle. Great guns and I mean you can't even get a barrelled action for the cost of one. It's probably my only gun I'd trust out to 500+ m. Consistently ... Beyond that I and let me emphasis I am not capable but the rifle has put some decent scores at 1000 yards in the hands of a friend of mine who is a much better shot than myself.

And for the price if you buy it's and don't like it you'll get your money back on EE pretty easy

I have owned several sps tacticals, all tack drivers never changed the stock on any of them .Love the stock or hate it it will not change the accuracy of that big pipe.Just my own personal experience.

I love the SPS Tac rifles so much, I bought a couple of .223 SPS Tac barrels with their 9" twist and had ONE of them rechambered to .22-250 for launching the longer 68 gr Hornady and 69 gr Sierra MK out to 800m/yds. I kept the other ONE in .223 for a future project that will involve the .223 AICS magazines (10 rounders). :D

I've been very happy with all the SPS Tac rifles I've bought, sold , or parted out! Remlinton got that right!

Cheers,
barney

I have a Tactical Remington .308 in a Bell and Carlson with a 4-12 VX1 and it shoots good. The Hornady A-max ammo shoots good, even better with reloads. I don't have pics of those yet. You can see one of my groups but the flier is me, my fingers were frozen.

I too have the 700 SPS Tactical in .223 and I love my rifle. It's certainly one of my favs. Put a Bushnell 10x Elite Tactical scope on it and it's been a great set up.

How is the reticle on your Bushnell 10x Elite Tactical scope? Not too thick?
