Remington 700 SPS tactical .223

I have been looking to get a .223 for a while now and have read alot about this rifle for this site and some others.

What are the gun nutters thoughts on this riffle ?.

I plan to leave it bone stock for a while perhaps a better trigger. It's diet is going to be cheap factory rounds for a while until reloading for it gets set up.

Any other guns in .223 I should look at in the 700$ price range ?.

Thanks for any helpful info guys !!!! :):):):)

I have exactly that, bone stock. I like it.

It shoots sub moa from the bench with handloads using Sierra 69 gr BTHP. The only negative is that the stock is quite flexible, I need to be really careful not to put much pressure on the buttstock or the groups will open up. In fact I pretty much shoot it free recoil with just a little bit of back pull on to my shoulder. I'd like to put a fibreglass stock on it but can't bring myself to spend $300 or more for a glass stock when I only paid $600 for the rifle with bases and rings.

I have no regrets about buying it and enjoy shooting it.

Just so happens the SPS Tactical .223, is one of my favorites.
I don't understand "leaving it bone stock" though ;).

Here's two more options for stocks, Bell & Carlson, and AICS.
(and a shameful plug :))

The rifle in front is a SPS Tactical .223

I'm using the SPS .223 Tactical bone stock and getting great results with 68 grs Hornady Match. Lots of groups under 1/2 MOA.
I did rework the trigger to a crisp 2lbs and had to remove forend stock material so the barrel would free float bench rested.
I bought this gun so my friends could try it and see what a stock Remington 700 can do with nothing more than a trigger job.
I wouldn't dream of changing the stock and could have sold this gun 4X over now. :)

I wish the SPS Tac was out before I bought my LTR as I would have likely gone that route and installed an aftermarket stock.

I think a SPS Tac in a McMillan HTG is near perfect though there's absolutely nothing wrong with the HS Precision LTR stock. I have (3) rifles built on the LTR stock and think highly of them.

Yup I have been looking at his site :D:D:D.

Al tho it seems that he currently only has CHOATE stocks for the 700.

Choate, Promag, MDT for stocks. Yes, you can make the AI mags work in the new promag stocks. Fitting is required but I will have a project rifle based off this in the future... waiting on custom action and barrels.

Nice starting platform. 68 to 75gr BTHP bullets. 69gr Mk's typically work superbly. Bed in the stock. get good dies and scale. Go have lots of fun.

The present generation Rems are very clunky in operation.... I think they have been talking to the same lawyers as Savage. But all that can be easily resolved when you decide you want to tune up the action and put on a new match barrel. Just enjoy it for what it is and learn lots.

Another option would be Savage. These typically shoot very well with minor TLC. Bedding is always important with any factory rifle. They can usually handle heavier bullets but that is now becoming hit/miss.

Bits, parts, swap this and that are possible with either platform so you don't need to feel stuck with either platform.

9x19, so exactly what is still Rem 700 SPS :)

Nice rigs.... love your "bipod"...

The SPS is Remington's entry level line. Same as any M700, but with lower end stocks, etc. Triggers are adjustable, as I recall, so there's no need change it.
Have a look at the Savages too. Best bang for your buck with outstanding out of the box accuracy. You'd still have to find the ammo it shoots best. You have to do that with any rifle, if you're not reloading.

I love my SPS Tac .223. What is most impressive is the fact that it comes with a 9" twist factory barrel quick loves the Sierra 69 grain MK booolit. :D

I am a shorter barrel kinda guy, I prefer them at 20" or shorter and Remmy did get something right even though the Hogue stock is what it is. I don't mind because they had to hit a price point for us.

Right now a bunch of us on this forum have leapt to the MDT LSS platform that allows us all kind of modularity and my cool FDE colored stock has been out hunting coyotes this winter.

You cannot go wrong forking out money for the SPS TAC in either caliber. What's not to like?

Cheers and keep helping dem noobs

Barney
