I'm looking for my first tactical/precision .308 and I'm looking at this rifle. The price is right and I want something compact. Does the 20'' affect accuracy or vélocity?
Your overall tought about the Remington 700 SPS Tactical .308??

Thanks

also take a look at the Savage 10PC it has a 20" barrel and the new ones are also threaded, I bought one when they first came out and its a shooter but I wish I would've gotten the threaded one to put on a brake for spotting my own shots at closer ranges

lots of people seem to like them, I bought a SPS tactical in .223 last winter and the first thing I did was got rid of that houge overmold stock, I found the stock to have alot of forend flex.

I like the feel of this stock. Is it possible to stiffen the forend??

Yes. And there are some decent tutorials on just that. It's not the best stock on the market but it'll do the job.

I'd go for the AAC version for the 20" long 1:10" twist barrel. Having said that, if you could score a decent price on a standard Tactical model I wouldn't hesitate to cut the barrel and have it re-crowned either. Either way, you'll have a decent platform to start with.

as a last ditch effort I installed two carbon fiber arrow shafts and then used some of my left over steel putty to epoxy them in and it still flexed more then I liked. even with all that work It would still touch when on a front bag or bipod

Interesting... I'm about to buy the 700 SPS Tac ACC-SD in .308 but I like the look of the Hogue stock better than the Ghille Green one that comes with the ACC-SD.
Was told that if I wanted the Hogue, I would have to buy it separately...

Then I found a fellow CGNr that is selling the Hogue stock from a 700 SPS Tac in .223, so I was looking to find out if it's an easy swap... (.223 to .308)

Now you guys have got me thinking.....

Can anyone comment on the Ghille Green stock that comes with the ACC-SD versus the Hogue?

There are a few different threads on here where guys have cut into the plastic of the stock and imbedded metal rods with Devon or JB Weld. Another technique was to take lead shot and Devon and fill in the voids in the plastic fore-end. It can be done.

The stock that comes on an AAC-SD IS a Hogue stock. It's just green instead of black.

I have the rifle and love it. My only complaint is it suppose to be a free floating barrel and after trying to run a piece of paper under the barrel when it's resting on the bipod it's no longer floating. A simple fix is the right sized socket wrapped in sandpaper, problem solved. Ive only really got back into shooting in the last couple of years and our range in Nanaimo only goes out to a little over 200yds and I can shoot moa at 200 all day long with factory match grade ammo. Loves the 168gr.

the 700 actions are the best actions in my opinion...robust, reliable, and accurate...had a 700 sps tactical in 308 with the 20 inch a few years ago, shot on average 1 moa with factory ammo...with handloads and perfect conditions it is a sub moa gun at 100 yards..best i could get it was about 1/2 moa at 100...as for velocity didnt notice a difference in a shorter barrel length
