Remington 700 SPS vs SPS Tactical

I want to build a rifle upon the remington 700 but I had a few questions.

I was wondering if there was anything that's different between the two rifles other than the barrel length and of course the restricted calibers for the tactical.

Also, does anyonw know what the action is made of? Is it stainless steel? thanks.

If the action on the SPS is black in color, it is Chrome moly. Probably 4140 or 4150
If the gun is silver then it is 416 stainless, this applys only to the SPS some of the other 700 models are stainless with various coatings

a 700 action is a 700 action whether its on an SPS or a Sendero. The differences are strictly cosmetic.

Agreed, but to not muddy the response did not want to include the 5R rifles which are stainless but coated, or the XCRs etc.

Buy the cheapest one possible. No need to spend money on factory bells and whistles that will never be used anyways.

Sell the extra stuff and use the money to offset your custom build.

Not really a big deal, as you'll probably be refinishing the custom build anyways. Unless you get a deal on a stainless version, don't bother with the added expense.

Like I said before, buy the least expensive version you can get - you'll save some money for the very same receiver.

When I built my M40A3 recently, I used a 700 SPS for the build, more so for the "G" series action, as thats what the USMC used for their's.

Don't spend anymore than you need to.
