Hello all,

Trying to get some more information on a new rifle. I am considering a Remington 700 stainless (not sure of which, SPS, CDL) or a Weatherby Vanguard stainless.

First of all are my objectives. I plan on using the gun for benchrest and small game hunting (50/50). I have decided on a 270 Win. caliber. ( I have heard many arguments for/against different calibers, this is the one I've selected) I favour accuracy above all else, please consider this in your advice.

I am leaning towards the Weatherby because the construction seems to be higher quality (one piece forged receiver and bolt, fluted bolt and bolt sleeve, etc).

I have shot Remington 700s before and have been impressed with the rifle, but have also heard the operation of the Weatherby's is extremely smooth and reliable. The Weatherby also comes with an accuracy guarantee, but I know the Remmy won't have much trouble competing.

The sub-moa model has also caught my eye, mostly because of the upgraded stock, but the price jump on WSS is pretty big (and I'm not entirely convinced that a regular vanguard can't get sub-moa performance.) I mostly considered a sub moa because I don't want to have to make modifications to improve accuracy later (other than potentially reloading)

I also welcome advice on a Tikka T3, even though I have kinda ruled this one out.

Please let me know which model you would vote for and why. If you have shot either rifle, let me know what you think and what kind of groups you acheived.

Thanks a lot

I was also faced with a similar decision of buying either a Rem 700 SPS SS or Ruger M77 Hawkeye All Weather. I went with the Remington because I like modifying my guns and there are a crapload of things you can buy for it.

The worst thing about this now is waiting for it to show up. :(

I think either is a good choice. The only thing that would convince me toward one over the other right now would be the fact that the Vanguard can be had in 300 Weatherby or .270 Weatherby, and I haven't owned one of those yet. I think a Vanguard SS in .270 Weatherby would be handy right now.

This is a bit of a no-win question because everyone has different opinions. Well, here's mine. :)

if you are set on 270, it doesn't matter what you choose. the 270 round and a factory gun are poor choices for "benchrest" shooting. However, all these guns in 270 are fine for small game.

For off the shelf accuracy, I like the Tikka. I have never had one let me down, but you're stuck with what you get because after market accessories are limited. I have owned several and I like them. I hunt with a Tikka 338-08.

For the best combination of accuracy, versatility, durability, and customizability, go Remington. I own several and I have several customized remingtons. My gunbuilder echoes what I have seen for myself, they are the best non-custom action you'll find for anything close to the money.

As slick as they look and feel, you will find very few Weatherby actions as the basis for precision rifles. Their triggers are not great in my opinion, Their lug design sucks (in my opinion as well) and god help you if you need replacement parts. Their "sub-MOA" guarantee is a bit of a scam because most reasonable quality factory rifles shooting premium ammunition will group sub MOA. Hell, my son had a Remington 710 that grouped sub MOA.

The Vanguard is not produced in 270 wby, only 270 win or 270 wsm.

Thanks, for all the input, would still appreciate some more comments on 700 accuracy vs vanguard accuracy. As I mentioned before, I am slightly leaning towards the vanguard, but I can certainly appreciate a nice stainless 700 especially some of the new ones with the XMark triggers. Plus I have the benefit of having experienced the way the 700 handles.

If anyone has input on the 700 BDL stainless (compared to the 700 SPS stainless) that would be great. I am not sure if one is the predecessor to the other.

thanks again

I recently bought a T3 Lite for a moose gun and I couldn't be happier! I was looking at getting a 700 SPS originally, and don't get me wrong Remington makes an amazing gun. With the stength of the dollar right now the Tikkas came way down in price and were the same as a 700. The bolt is by far way smoother and is a dream to carry all day. The only thing I don't like about the T3 is the price of mags, $60 is the cheapest I've found. No doubt about it I would buy another Tikka any day!

Funny I picked the T3 Lite SS 300wm from the above as the moose/bear gun, but I would like to get the Weatherby in same caliber later...:)

PS. 2 buds from my hunt camp shot SPS 300wm and 7mm mag.

SPS stainless replaced the BDL stainless and sells for around $100 or so less than the BDL SS did. The finish on the SPS isnt as well polished (more of a rough bead blast) but other than that they are the same.
