Looking for a new rifle and opinions. New hunter last year with a Browning AB3 7mm rem mag. Experienced handgun range shooter and some long gun shooting. Trading in the Browning for something new, I just didn't like the feel of the AB3, some of the features seamed to cheap although it was a nice shooting rifle. Also looking to change to a 30-06.

Looking for something that has stood the test of time and although there are lots of posts and complaints of Remington quality in the past several years most of them seem to be GM vs Dodge vs Ford type criticisms and I believe it must be the best selling hunting rifle of all time for a reason.

I love the look of the Remington 700 CDL SF. I'm wondering if you have any reasons that I SHOULDN'T buy this stainless fluted barrel and/or wood stock? I will use it both for hunting and the range. Have a Leupold VX2 3-9x40 to put on it already. I kind of like the old school look of the wood stock and am not afraid of scratching/wearing it, I think that gives it character.

Is there perhaps a different/better 700 model I should get? Cost isn't a huge issue, to a point.

Open to opinions of other Rem 700 suggestions also..

Winchester 70? Browning X-bolt? Also nice wood stock versions? Reasons to buy synthetic instead?

Thanks

Reasons not to get it would be scratching the stock up and they are a tad on the pricer side. They are one if not the top end of the 700's nowdays. I really like the stocks and flutes, classy looking rifles.
Another good 700 option would be an XCR2 and restock it with something a bit better if funds allow and use and abuse it.

.....and stay with the 7mag :)

Cabelas has it right now for $1139 vs $1399 at wholesale sports. I didn't think the $1139 was a bad price. I'm not too worried about scratches. I like the old worn look from years of normal usage. Saying that I'd still look after it just not baby it.

Does anyone have this gun already? Curious if you like the barrel and if you can shoot at the range more because it cools faster?

I am torn between calibres, I just feel the 30-06 wins by a margin for overall versatility.. Can buy heavier bullets, slightly less recoil.

I have several of the 700 CDL SF rifles and I think they are one of the finest models out there. Everyone I have shoot exceptionally well and my 257 Wby is phenomenal with 110 gn ABs. You will not (in my opinion) find a better, more aesthetically pleasing rifle in any price range up to double the cost. They are an exceptional value and to have a rifle built with all these features would cost upwards of 3K..........They just do not have a downside.

I question leaving a 7 mag for the '06 though.......The big 7 will do anything the '06 will and more, if you feel you are light for heavier game then I suggest stepping up to a 300 WM not an '06. If the 26" barrel is a real problem, then ship it over and I'll lop it off to 24" and recrown it for ya. I have looked at this and if I remember correctly the fluting stops about 3" from the muzzle so it would still look good, and wouldn't cut back into the fluting. Regardless it is still my opinion that the '06 is a step down from the 7 mag, and it won't do anything with a 180-200 gn bullet that the 7 mag won't do just as well with a 160-175 Partition or Accubond. And you will not be able to see any difference in recoil..........

Thanks c-fbmi! Love to hear those positive comments on the model itself it's helping me to make up my mind on it. I hear you on the caliber and that's awfully cool to offer the barrel work. If I did buy the 7mag id probably stay with 26". Still deciding on that. Appreciate the reply very much.
