Im going to pick up a pretty much new 700 sps all black in 308 from a friend of mine who only put 50 rounds through it. he bought an xcr so he has no use for the remington so its a sweet score for cheap for me! never owned one before and I would like to do a few upgrades but I dont plan on going too crazy. Ive seen pictures of these rifles with a mag. Id like to do that first. whats mods have you guys done and where is the best place to purchase? anything else a noob like myself should know about this rifle?

thanx!

Great gun, congrats! I have the same in .223. The first thing I did was axed the Houge stock in favor of and HS precision which I have since switched to an AICS 1.5. with a 10 shot mag. The XMark trigger out to make way for a Timney. Just shoot and enjoy your new gun and keep an eye out on the EE for good deals and upgrade as you go. Its a journey...

sweet thanx! yeah there was no way I was going to pass up this gun I cant wait!!!

You cant go wrong with a Harris , get the swivel base notched leg version and get a pod locking lever as well .

I was told that these guns had trigger issues by a co worker. Is this just a myth or was it an issue that remington has resolved? google turned up only a few answers.

My trigger worked fine, but then again I'm not very picky about it.

The DBM kits should drop in, but may require some lovin' in some circumstances. Not everything has the same tolerances after all. Make sure to doublecheck what type of magazines it is for. The one you linked looks like it's for the Remington magazines that you squeeze both sides to release.

Other kits use AICS magazines, and have different styles of magazine release.

Here's a thread about some various brands http://www.remingtonowners.com/topic179.html

I am in the market for a DM set up for my Rem 700. It is in an HS stock at the moment. The Remington factory mags are about the cheapest way to go, but 4rd capacity is a bit weak. I would like to find an affordable 5rd. I see Vbull is listed on that posted link.

Aside from the Remington through Wolverine, any other site sponsors have some other options in stock? I am looking, but it is a lot of websites, and unfortunately, not all have nice search functions.

Congrats. Great start into precision (or sporting) shooting. If you're going to stick with the original Hogue stock, you might want to think about bedding it. The X-Mark Pro trigger isn't too bad. The lowest I could get mind down to was 3.5lbs so I went for a Timney. Get a decent one piece scope base. Depending on which model scope you buy and the average range you will be shooting at, will determine if to get 0MOA or 20MOA or even 30MOA base. Bed you scope base as well if needed. Spend the extra on good glass!

DBM is nice at times but if you're precision shooting, chances are you'll be single feeding your ammo if you do your own reloading and the OAL of your ammo happens to be longer than your magazine can support.

I urge you to put good bottom metal on your rifle if you wish to switch to a DBM. Good bottom metal is expensive, but then you get what you pay for. IMHO, the factory floor plate is more likely to perform reliably and feed well than a cheap DBM. If you can't afford good bottom metal (Badger, Sunny Hill, Surgeon, etc) keep the OEM parts in place.

With respect to the Remington detachable magazine system - the machining on the bottom of the receiver is specific for that model. I retrofitted a Remington stock and magazine system to a standard ADL/BDL receiver, but it took a milling machine.
The aftermarket systems generally use a single position feed magazine, to get around the need to alter the receiver. On my competition rifle, I installed a PT&G unit (from juanvaldez), which uses AICS pattern magazines. This unit requires significant inletting of the stock, and installation of pillars. Other units, the HS being one, fit BDL inletting. HS has changed their magazine design; new pattern don't work with old pattern units.
From a shooting standpoint, adding a magazine system doesn't make the rifle shoot more accurately, but it makes sense for certain shooting situations. Ease of reloading is important in competitions where the exposure of targets is controlled in the butts, and they don't care if you are fumbling rounds into an internal magazine.
One of the better buys in a replacement stock is to get a take-off HS stock. Guys buy the rifle, then install the barrelled action is a chassis or other more expensive unit; sell the HS to recover some of the cost. These usually get listed for $250-$300, and are good value.

This is great info guys! What is the word on the plastic mag extension i see floating around the interweb?
