I need some advice. I want a tac driving .308 that I can make up a sweet load and punch paper at 100 to 500 yds and is also versatile enough to take in the field for mainly deer and coyote hunting. Call me a tacticool guy but I like the way they look and the other varmint rifles usually come with 26 inch barrel and are heavy as hell. You really pay for the "Tactical" name. I want something in the 22 or 24 inch range and it must be black. Not a fan of stainless jewlery, not knocking it, just not for me. I will be putting a Bushnell 4 - 12X 42 mm Yardage pro rangefinder scope on it. http://www.bushnell.com/general/rangefinders_yardagepro.cfm?section=General Use

Kimber Tactical: Haven't seen or heald one yet but looks cool on the web site, don't know much about them. Little pricey though. http://www.kimberamerica.com/rifles/tactical/tactical.php

Remington 700 VTR: With the triangle barrel and muzzle break, looks cool but the stock needs to be replaced. Very new gun which means not many people have one or tested them. Everything I've read so far says they're good except some people bashing their style. http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/centerfire_rifles/model_700/model_700_VTR.asp

Remington 700 SPS Tactical: Cool look'n little thing but a 20" barrel. Stock feels great with the rubber texture but apparently it's flimzy and whith a bipod flexes and is no longer free floating. http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/premier_dealer_exclusives/model_700_SPS.asp

Remington 700 XCR: Haven't seen one in stores but I hear it shoots great, again a 20" barrel which would save weight in the field, but you loose muzzel velocity. (200 FPS is what I've been told) http://www.remington.com/products/f.../model_700/model_700_xcr_compact_tactical.asp

Tikka T3 Tactical: Great shooting gun and one of 3 manufacturers that guarantee their accuracy. The only thing I don't like is the plastic look and feel of the stock, however it is free floating with aluminum bedding and the cheek piece is adjustable which is good with a higher scope like the Yardage pro. Little pricey. http://www.remington.com/products/f.../model_700/model_700_xcr_compact_tactical.asp

Let me know your opinion and if you have any experience with these or other rifles in their class.

I have a 700 SPS Varmint in 223 for target/coyote shootin'. Its my first varmint gun and I like it so far. The bolt is a little stiff but I'm sure that will work itself out over a while.

I also have a Tikka T3 but its the Lite model in 300 wsm for moose hunting. A very very well made gun! The bolt throw is unbelievably smooth and impressive. I don't find the "plastic" stock to bother me at all. I wouldn't actually mind getting a Tikka as my next varmint/target rifle.

Ever since Remington came out with a heavy barrel .308 in the 700 BDL back in the early 70's I have seen many versions of them that shot very well... today one of the nicest is the Varmint Laminated Stock version... if you can find one...
