Hey guys!

So I'm pretty new to target practice but so far I'm having a blast. I currently own a Remington 700 SPS Varmint with a Weaver Kaspa 4-16x 44mm Side Focus scope in .223. I plan to start reloading the ammo myself eventually to get some tight groupings at 100 to 200 yards.

I have no intention to put a huge amount of money on my rifle right now, but if I continue to improve and I have been improving quite a bit, my buddy suggested that I should upgrade it once I feel like I've reached the maximum of my equipment's potential. He said that I should upgrade the stock and do a bedding job, then replace the trigger and then the scope which is a budget scope for now obviously.

I'm having a great time with this rifle and I'm quite fond of the AICS chassis system, so I was thinking of dropping that in eventually... Anyway, that's enough for now, I was just wondering if I could get some feedback about what you guys think about these suggestions. Any suggestion of your own? Any additional info I should provide?

Cheers.

Of all the moves you've listed, reloading will get you the biggest accuracy improvement. The order of operation your buddy is suggesting sounds good too.

I am on the same journey with the same gun but with a 308. I don't have a lot of practical experience testing different products but I have done a ton of research and my priorities are kind of the same except that I am going to get a good quality scope before making other major investments in the gun (trigger, stock etc). I plan on bedding the factory stock this winter. I have also invested in reloading equipment.

I'm on a similar journey but a remington 700 in 308. So far, all i've done is get a 700 5r, timney 510 trigger, Cadex field strike chassis, and a zeiss conquest hd5 5-25x50mm. I went to the range today, finally got to look out to 300 yards, and shoot to 200 meters (barely could see the bullet holes, there was mirage as well (first time seeing it thru a scope)).
My plan for upgrades is a better scope, ive been eyeing a S&B PMII high power and a sphur mount. Then the next upgrade would be a match barrel and accurizing the action. I've already started reloading, today I shot my first 180 reloads without a single issue. Even got some good nodes going so I have some powder ranges to test out again.

You can replace the trigger for big bucks but if a crisp two pound trigger is all you need many 'smiths' can rework your existing 700 trigger for 50 or 60 dollars...

Thanks for the info guys, I had heard that you can make the Remington 700's stock trigger better by polishing the parts, I guess that might be an option. But in my experience you never know what you're getting into with custom jobs... Might work, might not.

My 700P upgrades were in this order:

1. Trigger (Timney 510)
2. New bottom metal with drop mags
3. Bedding
4. Muzzle brake
5. Quality bipod

This was after a decent scope (NF NXS 5.5-22x56) with a decent mount (NF Remington SA direct fit). Mine is a .308.

Here's a little trick for you that's cheaper than sleeving your bolt.

Just wrap the back of the bolt with a wrap or two of scotch tape just above the trigger.
It will improve the fit between the bolt and receiver and dampen the impact as the bolt taps as the pressure builds. That tap helps initiate the barrel harmonic.
It will last a surprisingly long time if you don't make it so tight that it binds against the reciver.

Cut the tape with scissors so you get a clean edge at both ends - not the saw teeth.

May sure that you wrap in increments of 360 degrees so you don't change the center line of the bolt.
