Remington 700 ! Where were the good old days ?

bought my 700 SPS in .308 about 5 years ago. (my trigger was on the recall). but overall. it is my hunting rifle and shoots very well and has never let me down... has yet to fail me!

This is what I mean trigger was on recall. To me that's a fail and my rifle and remington has let me down. Just my 2 cents using your words.

To be honest, I firmly believe that was a lawyer driven recall and nothing more..... There was a high volume of that rifle out there and if the trigger gunk truly was an issue, it was easily fixable at home...... If I still had one when the recall hit, I would never have bothered to send it in, I would have inspected my trigger for gunk and removed it if necessary and moved on.....

That my be true, further to that I have try some of the older remington 700 triggers and they were great very clean and crisp, is this just another point that says "remington 700's were better in the old days "

I get the negative comments towards the SPS and certainly the budget Remington line but the "higher end" 700's are still great rifles.

The main "advantage" to a 700 is if you happen to like this design of the 700 itself, which I do. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a non-budget 700.

I do prefer the older 700 triggers though.

There are several very good rifles in the same price range of the "real" 700, can't go wrong with most of them really..... but the 700 still holds it's own.

I have some "higher end" 700's and wouldn't hesitate to buy more, even today.

Here is an old M700 in the form of a Sportsman 78. It's the pre-SPS Remington budget gun. It's very smooth and well finished. It has been re-tubed with a SS 30/06 bbl. and has become a favourite.

I love the older "budget" Remington stuff .... like this Sportsman 78, the 600/660 series, the 788. They are real good work horse rifles.

I have a sps tactical 223 and a xcr tactical 223, for being the same gun they must have put some effort into making the sps action feel gritty I have to make sure to fully stroke action the tactical is silky smooth compared.

"New" Remingtons I have owned a blued SPS in .243, a SPS varmint in .223, a LTR in .223 (all sold) and a 700 Mountain SS in 7mm08.

All have shot well, but the Tupperware stocks are poor on the SPS models and the finish on all of their blued models (including the higher end LTR) is poor. Even the current BDL amd CDL blued models have a cheap finish. The SPS .243 had a defective trigger out of the box.

The 700 Mountain SS currently has a Wildcat Composites stock on the way. It shoots and the fit and finish with the original B&C stock was pretty good. I think it is a pretty good product.

I own a 1979 "Varmint Special" in .308 Win. It is a quality rifle with great fit and a superior finish than any modern 700 that I have seen. The 1977 Leupold M8 also works superb :

I keep a few Winchesters in the showcase, but do find them a little pricey.

The model 70 Featherweights (wood stocked) are pretty nice in terms of fit/finish, certainly up there with any rifle just above the 1K pricepoint.

I'm a little leery about them now since for 2016 they really hacked down the model 70 line - was less than half the offerings compared with 2015. I asked our Browning rep "why?" - didn't really know. I kinda get the impression that Winchester might have been an experiment for FN to see if they could recapture some of the (old) market that maybe didn't do well enough to keep the bean counters happy.

While they have gone full bore into their "Historical" rifles (1894, 1892 et al), and can you believe that a Model 94 take-down is selling for over $1700 (new 2016 prices), they seem to be scaling back the Model 70 line-up severely. And they more than doubled the offerings of the "entry level, compete with Axis priced" XPR line of rifles.

This is the third kick at the can for (Winchester) just in the time I can remember and based on the dozens of sub-models of the X-Bolt that came out new for 2016, to me anyhow, it looks like FN is banking on Browning to do the heavy lifting with the fewer Winchester models in production to offer a guy/gal the ability to buy a new rifle like "grand-dad" hunted with.

(just my opinion - will have to see how it turns out over the next few model years)

So at this time what is a decent hunting rifle? If the rems are less than they were, savage ? Tikka a budjet rifle? Who makes the best production rifle right now excluding semi custom (cooper and similar) and custom rifles?

In answer to your question, I like CZ for a production rifle that's around that 1000-1400 mark. They're a solid rifle and well built. Even if they're not prefectly smooth from the factory... Cycle, pull the trigger, repeat while watching a few episodes of Vikings or the Walking Dead... When satisfied, clean, and add a nice light coating of lithium grease.

I have 2 gun safes full of 700 Remington rifles. [and a couple of 721's as well] The 700's were built from 1963 to 2014.

So far, either I'm fortunate, or the quality is better than some would seem to think, since I have yet to get a bad one.

I have made custom rifles out of 5 or 6, but not because they were not performing well, but because I wanted a non-standard
chambering on that platform.

I do not care for the x-mark pro triggers, but a TriggerTech fixes that in a jiffy. I absolutely love my 338 in the CDL stock.

I have a number of "Classics", my favorite 700 variant. All my 700s will shoot sub-moa with loads they like. [Some will hold less than that]

But the 700 is most certainly not the only decent platform out there. I have Rugers, Winchesters, Vanguards, Parker-Hales and even a Ross!!

Oh yes, a lonely M11 Savage with a 40X barrel on it in a varmint stock in 225 Winchester. Very deadly on varmints.

I'm not in product bashing mood. Whatever you like......buy and shoot....lots, lol.

Regards, Dave.

How do you find the trigger tech trigger?? I'm looking at the idea for my build...

I absolutely love the TriggerTech unit. Breaks like glass, and will adjust down to around 2 lbs if you like a hunting trigger that light.

My LR target rifles wear Jewells, but the shoe on the TT is wide like the factory Remington Walker trigger, and very comfortable.

I tried one first, and immediately liked it so much I bought 2 more. Regards, Dave.

The TT's sound like a great product. Going to put one on my LTR very soon.

I have always wanted a classic 700 and never seem to end up with one. Senderos, Mod 7's, 600's, one 721, etc... But never a nice wood and blue clean 700.

My next two rifle purchases when I can afford it again are going to be a 700 and a M70. I sooooo want a nice 700 in 220 swift, 284, 257 Roberts, another 7mmSTW, or maybe even another 308 since I don't have a 308 bolt anymore. People like Eagleye and C-FBMI make me jealous with their 700 collections.
