Don't think it has to due with the cost of shooting 300 win mag, if you hand load it almost the same price as 308 just the cost of the extra powder.
I think is because Remington is just a beginner precision rifle unless you put in the cash to customize it. for the money Savage shoots better and if you are going to put the cash in to a 700 you might as well spend it up front and buy an HS precision HTR!
I have to throw in on this issue:
Yes, Remington is an "entry level" rifle . . . the thing is, it's the very best entry rifle out there.
If you get into the precision game with a Remington and decide that it's not your thing, you can always get your money back out with it.
Try that with a Stiller or a Panda.
If the precision game is your thing, then you can consider trading up.
VERY few people will outshoot their Remington.
To quote the gentleman that taught me . . . "You are either shooting a Remington, or getting your ass kicked by one."
