I am pretty set on getting an HB .308 Win now, and was evry impressed with the Remington 700 Police. I have, however, recently discovered the option of a Winchester Model 70 Stealth, which retails at an also very competitice price.

Can someone recommend either one of the two? And what are the advantages/disadvantages of getting one or the other? Diffeneces in quality/performance? Feedback is very much appeciated!
Thanks!

I voted for the police only because I like Remingtons - there is nothing wrong with the Winchester rifles but I prefer the ease of upgrading Remingtons (availability of parts/number of smiths who can easily work the action/etc.). That being said if you want a Winny get one! My view on this is easy - get into a store and handle both - Decide from there!

You've obviously never held a Savage 10 FP LE2B. That would be my vote (oh wait, already got one), but the Remington would be my second choice. As Glock4ever stated, there's tons of stuff available for upgrades and they are a damned well proven platform.

I agree with BigUglyMan 100%, and I own a 700P. Give Rick at ATR a call, he had them instock the last time I talked to him
I would have to agree with Steve and B.U. M. Savage LE2B would be my 1 st choice, Rem 700 P 2nd, Win Stealth 3rd only because I don't like the stock on the Win, it feels sleazy.
The Win metal work I think is better, but by the time you have either the Win or Rem tweaked to shoot well the Savage will be the better deal.
Steve am out of 700Ps at the moment and LE2Bs for that amatter, more in 3 weeks.

I've got BOTH Rem and Win StealthII ! Both are tweaked and are tack drivers. Right now my M700 is in an AICS stock. It fits my hand and body position nicely.

My wife who has smaller hands really loves the newly re-designed stock of the StealthII. She prefers the skinnier pistol grip and the spongier recoil pad. 8) She's pleased with the factory setup (I tuned the trigger) and she likes the base / ring combination with a Super Sniper 10X scope for Precision Rifle matches. So we'll just keep thing stock/factory.

If you really like the ability to upgrade your platform for / with whatever works for you, then go for the M700. If you prefer the flat bottomed reciever and the 2 screw bottom metal of the StealthII, then by all means buy one. :p

I am a Winchester fan, but my hunting rig is a Rem M700 ADL in .223 for earth pigs and my Precision rig is another Rem M700 fluted. Triggers are tweaked. Bases are NEAR Mfg and rings are all Leupold Mark 4. I like the ability to buy / sell , add / tweak/ remove and try different configs with my M700 fluted.

Buy whatever keeps you up late at night thinking about wind patterns and how your bullet will react !

Then come out to our Precision Rifle matches and use (become an expert, too) what your rig was designed for.

Cheers,
Barney :p

I like the smoothness of the Winchester actions, however, I haven't held the Winchseter, Remington, or the Savage. Is there any difference in barrel life (in a .308), or the bedding quality, or out-of-the-box-accuracy? Things like recoil pad, etc. aren't really an issue, because that can be easily modified at little cost.

RCMP use the Winchester, but I don't know if that could be seen as an indication as to the quality or performance of the Win?

There is no need to upgrade the Winchester Stealth. Put a Near MFG base with TPS rings, a good scope and you can nail moa @ 600m boringly. The CRPF action is wonderfully smooth. Remingtons.... no thanks.

Hey Boomer and Final,
I've just been breaking in a Win Stealth today. What do yours like for bullet weight and powder, if you don't mind me asking?

Chers,
