Hey guys/girls,

Well, I have been scouring the internet for the past while, and for about 6 hours today (it is now 3:22am), eyes are bloodshot, headache etc....

I am trying to decide which bolt action to get, and have a limited time to do so (well the truth is I am going crazy not having a centrefire rifle to shoot :D ). I had my mind made up for a long time on the Savage, and was just waiting for the new centre feed models to get stocked in Canada so I could pick one up, but now I am lost yet again.

I had not even considered the cons of the Savages having an internal box magazine. I mean if a round gets jammed up in there or in the action, it just seems like it would be a huge pain in the ass as compared to a detachanle magazine. Also, for some reason I did not know that the 700P's were actually parkerized which is super nifty (I think I prefer the look of the 700P, yes I know not to base it on that, but it still factors in).

No matter how much I look up and no matter how much closer I think I am getting to making a decision, I read something new, and it sets me back to square one. Negatives I have read about the Savage are feeding/extraction problems, and some barrels no being floated properly. For the 700P it's the extra gunsmith work that will need to be done to squeeze all the performance out of it, and poor quality control/craftsmanship in some areas of the rifle, as well as something along the lines of voids or air pockets in the stock??

So, if you guys don't mind I have some questions (please bare with me, I know your gag reflexes were probably activated as this topic has been discussed so much):

1. I see to keep reading about a deep throat on the Remington .308s only. Do the Savages have the same? What effect does this have and is it necessary to fix it?

2. How brutal is the 700P's trigger out of the box? Is it nearly mandatory to get it tuned? How much is a trigger job on one of these rifles?

3. Seeing as I am just entering the world of bolt action centrefire, aside from a trigger job, is there anything else that should really be tuned by a gunsmith on the 700P to bring it up to the same accuracy as the out of the box Savages?

4. How does the HS 700P stock compare to the HS Savage stock and McMillan?

5. This is the big one...... Are you Savage owners ever inconvenienced by the internal box magazine? Is the hinged floorplate on the 700P an advantage?

I have read the posts here and on the savageshooter forum about the new detachable mags Savage has come out with on some of their hunting models. My biggest fear, is spending 1500+ on a setup, only to have the come out with a DM for the 10FP's a short time later. Is it pretty standard a feature to have tactical rifles use a blind magazine? Think that will change on the Savages?

Hope this doesn't see like too scatterbrained of a post, but I am just running around in circles and getting dizzy trying to decide.

Can anyone offer any advice/personal experience on any of the above questions? Or better yet, anyone near the Niagara Region want to take me out to shoot a 10FP or 700P (as I don't know of anywhere around here i can even look at a 700P)?? :D ;)

Absolutely ANY input would be greatly appreciated.

My 700p LTR's trigger isn't brutal at all. Granted, I'm fairly new to the long range/precision game, and I don't know of all the finer points, but I don't think I'm going to touch it.

I have zero problems with my savage and the internal box mag.

The only disadvantage is with my full rail on it's just a little bit harder to put rounds in. Still prefer the Savage to my old Sendero though.

Get the savage, I have a 10fp, sub, sub moa with handloads, out of box, my handloads are max OAL no problem sierra match 168g.

Just get the Savage and be done with it, is all I'm trying to say.
(accutrigger of course!)

Is is very tough to lose an internal box magazine.
Both rifles may need some work done to them to get them to shoot to their best. Trigger jobs, bedding or free floating the barrel will not break the bank.
Most chambers on factory rifle will be a bit on the long side. The manufacturer does not know what ammo you will be shooting out of it so, they cover their ass by making sure everything will fit.

I have never owned a Savage. I have lots of R700's. The 700 trigger is very easy to have tuned down to 1 lbs. There isn't a factory rifle action out there - Savage or Remington included - that would not benefit from accurization, the vast majority of factory actions are not trued.

On another point, you will never find a greater selection of after market accessories than you will for Remington. (ie: AI does not make a chassis system for Savage).

I get the impression you are going for the "tactical" look. Tactical does not always mean more accurate. If you look at the number of Remington vs. Savage actions on custom F class rigs, you will see that experience, popularity and ease in finding after market parts favors Remington.

Lots of guys are really happy with their Savages and if it comes down to the best "bang" for the buck, you can't argue they're pretty good. I've never seen a factory savage come close to taking home any hardware at a UIT/F-class shoot though. Jerry (Mysticplayer uses a stevens action custom and kicks serious butt though)

Get the Remmy. They aren't bad out of the box as many proponents of Savage would have you believe. I prefer the hinged floorplate to the bling magazine. Savage does have the oversized bolt knob but overall the Remmy will be easier to customize which you will eventually do (not very many accuracy freaks stay stock anyway.)

Have you tried handling either of these guns? That should be your next move before you decide anything. One may feel much better to you than the other...makes the decision easy.

My opinion tho...
Save some money and get the Savage. Even if you decide to "accurize" it later on, you'll still end up spending less and have a more accurate gun. Don't listen to the Remington sheeple!! ;):p

I have only had the chnace to handle a Savage in a Choate which I didn't like at all. You guys expect that Savage will come out with thei new DM system on the 10FP's? Should I wait? I am super nitpciky and will spiral into a deep depression if a new mag sysetm comes out for the Savage LOL

get the Savage...my .223 10FP shoots sub-moa with factory ammo all day along....
Choate stock - I don`t know....I like it....alittle bit ugly :), but it does its job :)))))
HS or McMillan will be better choice... get a Savage.... :)

My 10fp 20" in 308 has shot sub MOA from the day I bought it. It prefers heavy (180gr) bullets but will eat just about anything. I shoot it up to 600M after that my scope runs out of elevation. I am a hge fan of detachable mags so that is the only minus with that rifle.

Owned & enjoyed both...Out of the box, the Remington needs some work..i.e. bedding & 3lbs trigger job minimum..Add $150.00+.
Team Savage, get it out of the box, adjust the trigger to your liking & off you go..

Go Savage Mcmillan or H-S stocks.

I have both.
Savage is cheaper, but my Remington is more accurate.
Also you can get more aftermarket gadgets for your Remington.
IMO Rem700 is the best value rifle you can get for accuracy.

Good luck

I have a 700P that I have done a lot of work too, but it's just the way I want it now. I got it bedded, trigger job, recoil pad, badger bolt knob, and I even managed to get the god of gunsmiths in Calgary to put a McMillan adjustable cheek piece on it for me. It cost me alot of money, but it's perfect for me now. It's a rifle that I'm going to own for the rest of my life and I wouldn't get rid of it for the world. Spend the money on what you want and make it fit you and you won't be sorry.

I have a Rem 700P 223 that I purchased earlier this year. I only had to adjusted the trigger, which I did myself. I installed a Bushnell Elite 4200 6X-24X power a/o mil-dot scope with Leupold 2 piece bases and rings.

I have only worked up varmint/gopher loads for it so far but being able to group/cluster every one of these shots into one tiny hole @ 100 yards and 3 3/4" groups at 300 yards is totally awesome to me.

I can hardly wait to see what it can do when I take the time to do some proper target load developement.... :dancingbanana:

I also looked at the Savage rifles before I bought my 700P. Sorry to all those that love their Savage rifles but I just couldn't put one of those ugly rifles into my safe..... :p

WHOA!!!! I see that you can buy an HS magazine kit for the 700, almost looks like an M14 magazine!!! Is this a quality upgrade? Expensive? That could very well be the determining factor in my choice!!!! This is HUGE!!! LOL

Also what about the LTR? Any advantages or disadvantages to this rifle over the 700P?

Thanks
