Remington 700P vs Savage 10FP....help needed

I went to the HS site to check out the magazine kits.

They look like Kwik-Klip conversion kits and magazines too me.

I have been using one of the long action KK conversion kits on my 280 Rem 700 Mountain Rifle for about 14-15 years now. The 4 rounders work great but I have had a lot of trouble with the 10 round mag's.

After the first couple of shots the remaining bullets jam up in the mag so I have to remove the mag fiddle with the bullets re-insert the mag shoot it a couple of more times then remove the mag and fiddle with it again. The ten round mags are now mostly used to store extra bullets....

I don't need it for my 700P though Brownells has a extended mag that I would consider though. Check it out here http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=19711&title=REMINGTON+700+MAG-XTENDER

If you are thinking about a mag upgrade, get this one instead.

I'm going to agree with Splatter on this one. I have looked into each and every mag conversion for my 700P there is. After getting countless opinions from the people I trust, V-Bull is the way to go. As for the HS conversion, if you can get it, there are jamming issues with the mags, just like every other one as far as I have heard. The V-Bull one is expensive, but as far as I can tell the only one that won't give you headaches. I guess now all you have to do is justify whether or not approximately $700 for the complete install is worth it. I know in the near future I will most likely be adding this upgrade, I just would like more feedback as to it's effectiveness before I dish out that kind of cash.

I was never really inclined toward a Savage. My daughter & son in law each have a 112BVSS in .22-250 and after seeing how well they shot right out of the box so to speak, and taking into account the price, I decided to get one. I got the same model in .25-06 and with the second batch of reloads I have a three shot group, witnessed, shot @ 185yds, measuring 0.486". Definately a 'keeper'.:) :D

Farmboy have almost identical rifles. I've never had a problem with the feeding on my Savage LE2B and it shoots pretty decent groups with minimal load development. Actually the first powder and bullet combination I tried shot sub 1/2" at 100 yards. Trigger is excellent out of the box and it comes with the best stock you can get, IMHO (McMillan). What more can you ask for?

I wouldn't wait on a new mag system. I have had zero use for multiple mags in my Savage and frankly can't see why I would want a DM system. Some guys go on about using different loads and a DM is the fastest and most convenient way to swap them out. I don't believe in multiple loads in any rifle. Get one load that does what you want, shoots well and fed right, then stick with it. Multiple loads is a sure way to get yourself into trouble with having the wrong ammo or wrong scope setting in when a certain situation comes up.

I have a rem 700 p with new fiberglass stock, bedded action and free floated barrel with 3 lb trigger pull, It shoots pretty good but I recently bought a cheap Stevens 200 and with a cheap bushnell scope on it and it shoots tighter groups and cost a fraction of the price. I don't know if it is I have not found the right bullets for my rem700 or if something needs to be tinkered with but if the stevens is any indication on out of the box accracy then the Savage may be the way to go if you don't want to do any upgrading. If you want to add upgrades the Rem700 is probably the better choice.
That being said the action on the stevens is no where near as nice as the one on my rem700.

I now have a savage LE2B in 308 and just love the McMillan stock, I used to have a 700 PSS ,I had changed the trigger and had the bolt modified ,installed a sako extractor to replace the original one also added a tactical bolt handle =$250 plus I bedded the stock myself.
The Savage mods are ,a bedding job and a larger bolt knob. Had a friend machinist turn the aluminium knob ,I grinded down the original knob, threaded it and installed the knob...no cost. I have no use for mags ,in both rifle I installed a aluminium device to convert it to single shot .
I'd go LE2B again:D

I have 2 Savage rifles 110&12 I have yet to have any problems with the Internal box magazine and yes accessories for the Remington are more prevelant,However the amount of accessories offered for the Savage increase almost monthly and basing one's choice the fact it wont fit a AICS stock is just plain nonsense

Currently in possesion of 2 Rem 700 (p) and one savage 12FV...I would say it is no contest as far as fit / finish overall ' feel ' the Remington is by far the better rifle hands down....look around for a ' deal ' on 700P you WILL NOT be sorry

I have a Savage with McMillan stock and, well, I sold my Remingtons. By far a more accurate rifle out of the box. Just recently picked up an LTR for $400 and I still haven't found a load it likes. I'm now tring to get 2600fps with 168's so we will see. Get a Savage, you get a lot for your money.

My 700p LTR's trigger isn't brutal at all. Granted, I'm fairly new to the long range/precision game, and I don't know of all the finer points, but I don't think I'm going to touch it.
My adjusted 700P trigger, I can honestly say, is the best trigger I've ever used, and I've shot with a two-stage match trigger. It's perfectly crisp, with absolutely no creep, and adjusted to a nice 3lbs. I'll fire you a PM with some more "info."

I have the savage 12bvss in the choate stock, and just picked up the 10fp in the HS stock, sold all my Rim 700. don't get me wrong, the 700 will shoot good but needs alot of work. My savage out of the box hard to beat.

Well, I have been scouring the internet for the past while, and for about 6 hours today (it is now 3:22am), eyes are bloodshot, headache etc....

sell the damn computer?

lol i wouldnt even know what to do with myself, i would be so lost without this board and the internet for research...

After recently finding out that only the factory stocked 10FP comes in 223, I guess I will have to get a 308, which was a bit unexpected... but I guess makes more sense if I'm going to be spending so much on a rig.... :p

It's looking like the McM stocked 10FP is the way to go for me right now.. we'll see what happens with savages magazine system... would the bottom of the McM stock accept a retro fit DM system if savage did come out with one later?

Hey Mysticplayer.... has the savage receiver been altered on your DM model to accomodate the new system or do you expect it would be an easy upgrade after the fact?

Again if anyone is willing to take me out to a range who has a 700P or 10FP I will gladly come along and help pay expenses (ammo, range time etc). Anyone at silverdale or nrsgc?

Thanks very much to those who have responded so far, feel free to keep going as I AM reading it all.

I shoot both a Savage 10 and a remington 700. They both shoot great. You will get a better bang for your buck with a Savage tho. My out of the box accuracy with the Savage was amazing. They make a great action and a super barrel. And as far as accessories for Savage you can get everything plus more in Savage now becasue of how popular it has become recently, and everything is less expensive. Internal box mag is the only downside of Savage really.

savage ofcourse

Hey guys/girls,

Well, I have been scouring the internet for the past while, and for about 6 hours today (it is now 3:22am), eyes are bloodshot, headache etc....

I am trying to decide which bolt action to get, and have a limited time to do so (well the truth is I am going crazy not having a centrefire rifle to shoot :D ). I had my mind made up for a long time on the Savage, and was just waiting for the new centre feed models to get stocked in Canada so I could pick one up, but now I am lost yet again.

I had not even considered the cons of the Savages having an internal box magazine. I mean if a round gets jammed up in there or in the action, it just seems like it would be a huge pain in the ass as compared to a detachanle magazine. Also, for some reason I did not know that the 700P's were actually parkerized which is super nifty (I think I prefer the look of the 700P, yes I know not to base it on that, but it still factors in).

No matter how much I look up and no matter how much closer I think I am getting to making a decision, I read something new, and it sets me back to square one. Negatives I have read about the Savage are feeding/extraction problems, and some barrels no being floated properly. For the 700P it's the extra gunsmith work that will need to be done to squeeze all the performance out of it, and poor quality control/craftsmanship in some areas of the rifle, as well as something along the lines of voids or air pockets in the stock??

So, if you guys don't mind I have some questions (please bare with me, I know your gag reflexes were probably activated as this topic has been discussed so much):

1. I see to keep reading about a deep throat on the Remington .308s only. Do the Savages have the same? What effect does this have and is it necessary to fix it?

2. How brutal is the 700P's trigger out of the box? Is it nearly mandatory to get it tuned? How much is a trigger job on one of these rifles?

3. Seeing as I am just entering the world of bolt action centrefire, aside from a trigger job, is there anything else that should really be tuned by a gunsmith on the 700P to bring it up to the same accuracy as the out of the box Savages?

4. How does the HS 700P stock compare to the HS Savage stock and McMillan?

5. This is the big one...... Are you Savage owners ever inconvenienced by the internal box magazine? Is the hinged floorplate on the 700P an advantage?

I have read the posts here and on the savageshooter forum about the new detachable mags Savage has come out with on some of their hunting models. My biggest fear, is spending 1500+ on a setup, only to have the come out with a DM for the 10FP's a short time later. Is it pretty standard a feature to have tactical rifles use a blind magazine? Think that will change on the Savages?

Hope this doesn't see like too scatterbrained of a post, but I am just running around in circles and getting dizzy trying to decide.

Can anyone offer any advice/personal experience on any of the above questions? Or better yet, anyone near the Niagara Region want to take me out to shoot a 10FP or 700P (as I don't know of anywhere around here i can even look at a 700P)?? :D ;)

Absolutely ANY input would be greatly appreciated.
not a doubt, savage is cheaper and shoots accurately out of the box. you can't go wrong. get the one with the mcmillan stock is 10fp?
