Here's a question for you precision shooters. I found a Remington 700P on an Accuracy International Chasis:

I want to save my money up for a good shooter. Do any of you think that this is a good choice for 2000 dollars? It certainly seems like a nice rifle. While I was going to OPT for the CZ 750, I decided it would be smarter to get something that has way more replacement parts floating around.

So CGNers, is this a good choice? I have shot a good amount from a hunting rifle before, but I don't know anything about precision rifles. Book recommendations about precision shooting would also be nice.

im no pro when it comes to the 700p, iv heard different things about the barrels...

nor do i know the price for the AICs stock, but if it comes in around the 1000 doller mark you be better off to buy a 700 5R, found for around a Gnote, sell the hs precission stock, take that $ and add it to the 1000 still in your pocket and buy the AICs, in the end you would be out the same amount of $, sure its a lil more work, but as far as im concerned the 5R barrel from remmington is better then the one that will come on the 700p

Hmmm, great idea. I saw the 700 5R for sale on a couple of the supporter's websites. I'll probably buy that as my first .308 rifle. I'll look around for the AIC stock and buy it when the time is right. Putting the two together should make a nice enough shooter.

With that aside, can anyone recommend books on the subject? I'd like to read up on the subject as I plan to do some dedicated plinking this summer. :D

It is still a factory action and barrel combo on a $1500 stock.

It will shoot no better/worse than any other off the shelf Rem 700. IMO the AI stock is way overpriced (insert flames here after quoting me) and better stocks can be had for less or equal cost.

Alright. I guess I'll just get one and look hard for a good chassis that's affordable. I guess I got a little too enthusiastic seeing this. It seems like a nice enough rifle.

I think I'll just wait to buy a Remington 700 5R and upgrade it later.

No flames here, just a question:
What would you recommend as an AI AICS alternative?

I'm a satisfied AI AICS stage 2.0 owner but it is pricey and I'm always interested in getting something better and less expensive.

A Remington with a factory HS stock (perhaps with a skim coat of bedding) is going to shoot as well as the barrelled action is capable of shooting.
If you are going to restock, get something that enhances ergonomics. Buying for the LKF isn't the best use of your money, if your primary objective is shooting.
Pretty hard to beat one of Ian's stocks.

There is an example fo a stock with desirable features: stability of an aluminum chassis, adjustable comb, adjustable length of pull.

There's the MDT Tac 21 if your into that...I am :D

That's exactly what I had my eyes on. Mystic Precision is going to get their hands on it. I'll be purchasing it. Slapping a Remington 700 5R onto that will make one heck of a shooter.

Now to choose a good scope. . . . I have no idea where to start. I think I'll just look around and find what the precise shooters swear by.

if you want big bang for small bucks

Grab a stevens 200 remove the barrel and stock and sell them, buy a shilen from mystic precision. stick the whole thing in an AI stock. then compete and stomp the crap out of guys with stock remi barrels. Jerry at mystic is a guru at this technique. PS don't shoot against Jerry for money.

I would definitely recommending feeling up an ai stock before shelling out for one. I love the look and the capabilities and I fondle one at least once a year. Then I put it down as it feels terrible in my hands. Something about that thumbhole and my hands. To each their own.

I was the same. When these stocks came out, I was so hot to trot to get one, I did, I bought a 1.5 and for me personally I was very disappointed with the fit and feel of it for me. Try as many out as you can before you shell out that much money. Quality is not a question, AI is tops, but it may not be the stock for you.

i bought that exact package from wolverine and im more then satisfied, shoots wicked, just had it out today. u wont be disappointed with it for sure. sure its a lil pricey but oh well
