You know, i'm fairly new to the shooting world, and i've already accumulated a few firearms to have fun with. Recently, within the last couple weeks, i've become enamoured with the thought of owning a Remington 700..i mean, they just look so damn ###y! In the last 24hrs however, it has been revealed to me that there have been many cases of defects with the 700's misfiring 'n such. This turned me off slightly. It's like being set up to date a hot girl, and finding out she had chlamydia at one time..it just ruins the image. I have a decent bolt action Savage 111 in 30-06, but want a good bench bolt rifle to target shoot with (in .308), with a ###y heavy barrel, and tactical stock. My budget is set at about $1000-$1500. Do any of you CGN'rs know what Savage models i should look for? I'm only saying Savage because they're tried, tested and true...

You will find nothing wrong with either brand - Savage or Remington. My personal preference is Remington but Savage has many followers and I also own one of them. Savage's website shows all the various models and I am sure Savage fans will chime in with their faves. By the way, 'rifle misfiring' isn't something I've heard of - just saying.

Those Remington misfires is a bunch of bs , the only become unsafe if an unskilled individual starts tampering with s**t, my stock 700 trigger has been worked down to 1.5 lbs by a skilled smith (Dennis Sorensen ) and honestly I can use the thing as a baseball bat and it doesn't go off

I would forget all you have heard regarding the "defective" Remingtin 700s. I have never had a failure in the dozen or more that I have owned. If $1500 is your budget for rifle only, I would look at the Remington 700 5R as my first option, I have never owned one but by all reports they are an excellent rifle with no need for any upgrades to get going.

Good luck!

I'm sure savages are fine rifles the same way I'm sure ford trucks can get the job done but I would not buy one just my opinion my rem 700 is like the good ol Chevy and browning well that's like Toyota you know it's better but it's too exspencive flashy and popular for my liking ! The old Chevy just feel's right that's how I see it :)

I'm not a Remington fanboy but I love the 2 that I own. For a bench type Remy I'd recommend either a 700P or a 5R Milspec. Both are very accurate and look great. My 700P does amazing things with 168gr A-max's. If you're not going to do much past 600 yards a 700 LTR with the shorter barrel would be fun.

Now, if you're still nervous, there are some great Savages out there. I'd have a good look at either a model 10 FCV or 10 FCP. The second one is a little pricier but you have the option of an HS Precision or McMillan stock

Just my 2 cents

I've been present (yes, actually there) when a SAVAGE (3 different ones) wouldn't fire and couldn't fire, all trigger problems. A friend had a BRAND NEW one with a cracked bolt. Not a hairline crack but split in 2 and I don't mean the bolt knob, the bolt body cracked in 2. Really, I'm not trying to bash Savage, they're great, just showing that ANY company can have the occasional issue. In the 40+ years I've been shooting I've never seen a Rem with any of those problems and I've fired over 8000 rounds through mine without a hitch. I doubt you'd go wrong with either firearm, they both have qualities people like and dislike. Best of luck with your choice.

I have 2 Remington700's and have only had 1 misfire... I hand rolled a batch of ammo and forgot to put a primer in one of the rounds. Those damned Remington's!!!

In all seriousness. I have 2 Remington 700's and a Savage 11. I never use the Savage. Why bother with the Savage when I can shoot the Remington? To me, it's kind of like driving the Chryco when you have a Porsche sitting in the garage...

Well, i'm not going to rule out getting a 700..they're just so damn ###y! And what's up with the hate on Savages? aside from their 'not so appealing looks', they're just as well built, if not better, than any Remington..C'mon CGNr's, be the hot date's friend and convince me that she got it from a boyfriend who cheated on her..Get me behind a 700!

Some people like Savages and if you can live with a Savage - fine. I'll take a 700 any day of the week thank you...

Buy what works for your game / hunt/shoot/ march!

Buy what works for your budget, optics, look-cool-value!

Buy so that yer #### does not fall off!

At the end of the day, you are the shooter and you have to deliver the goods! :sniper:

And what's up with the hate on Savages? aside from their 'not so appealing looks',

Now I don't "hate" my Savage, it's just the bolt is chunk compared to the Remington which is silky smooth. I also find the Savage boring if you can apply it to a gun. It works, it's accurate, it's cost effective and it's boring. I never use it and haven't since I bought it on impulse. I took it out once, fired a dozen rounds, replaced the trigger with a Timney and then put it away.

I just bought my first gremlington at the Calgary gun show... A plain ole 700 SPS DM in aught-6... It seems to do everything my savages (x5) do with the bonus of the long action making for a longer canoe paddle.

Seriously tho... For a budget gun I must say the trigger is better then any non-accutrigger savage I have purchased but aside from that it does nothing for me... Even the finish is just so/so compared to the bluing on all my savage factory barrels... Stock quality is below what I would expect as its easily as flexy as a 111FCXP and I had to clearence the forend a bit as I had lots of high left fliers...

So far I have the remmy shooting 180gr silver tips into 1.250 3rnd groups... My savages do that too with factory ammo... A few den did better then that.

Added perc to savage... That barrel but takes tube swaps from "qualified gunsmith only" to "read carefully during install"... Takes me about an hour to swap a savage barrel start to finish now that I have done several... No action truing required unlike remys, everything is sime to disassemble and requires no specialty tools... Savage makes a simple and easy to build gun.

I think the unsafe 700's have been corrected with the X-mark pro trigger that comes standard with all production 700's now. Never point the barrel at anything you don't intend to shoot and you'll be fine.

The Rem 700's miss fire when , in the rare case the seer engagment " on the trigger " is not set up properly from the factory. Any rifle will do that no matter the brand.

Basically as another member mentioned ... Its a bunch of B.S

Dont steer away from your Rem choice. Best factory action on the market

For 1000.00-1500.00 build your current savage into something better, unless its your go to hunter as is. You can get a good stock for 400.00 to 600.00, a custom barrel for 500.00, trigger for a couple hundred. If you go this route you'll be way further ahead than any factory remmy.

Those misfire reports where from awhile ago and it has mostly been ruled out as people screwing with their triggers when they werent supposed to or not trained to.

If you want a heavy barrel and like the all black look I would recommend the 700 police in .308. Its a great rifle have the 20 inch heavy barrel version but it also comes in 26 inch.

I'm hopefully going to be buying a friend of mine's 700 VTR in .223, I love the look of the triangular barrel :)
I'm very much a rookie too, all I have heard in my research is that Remington has now gone off-shore (China) to have these built. Not sure if this is true or not, but if it is, I guess getting a older used one would be the best bet???
