Remington 700's..

Well, i'm not going to rule out getting a 700..they're just so damn ###y! And what's up with the hate on Savages? aside from their 'not so appealing looks', they're just as well built, if not better, than any Remington..C'mon CGNr's, be the hot date's friend and convince me that she got it from a boyfriend who cheated on her..Get me behind a 700!

Most people buy a rifle to shoot, but it sounds like you just want to, um......get naked with it. Weirdo

C'mon baby, i'm hoping that the SPF on the 700 in the EE is mine..i already had one get away from me! Just hoping it was too late for the seller to message me back last night, and i'll be getting the "hey, give me my money" message at some point this morning...

Those misfire reports where from awhile ago and it has mostly been ruled out as people screwing with their triggers when they werent supposed to or not trained to.

Agreed, before I bought my 700 a friend told me he watched a show saying how dangerous the 700 with accidently discharging. It was due to people messing around with triggers and safties. Anyone I know that owns a 700 have never had any issues with the rifle ever. So I bought one and I am very happy with it, but the stock is garbage (to flexible). But that was changed quickly (6 rounds on factory stock and then replaced). And now I have to deal with shooting this, my life is sooooo tough.002.jpg

have you looked at the savage target series rifles? I bought an F/TR in .223, they also come in .308 http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/12FTR
I like mine, never owned a 700 but I have shot several, I like them too

its says the f/tr lists for $1400 but i got mine last year for $1150 from Epps I thought that was fair

really its comes down to what you like

Just got skunked 'AGAIN' for a 700..but yeah, i'm looking into the Savage FCP-K..Seems like that's about as close as i can get to matching esthetics of a 700, with the added bonus of it just being a Savage.

" With the added bonus of it just being a Savage " ????

Having it say Savage is not an added bunus

... Why bother with the Savage when I can shoot the Remington? To me, it's kind of like driving the Chryco when you have a Porsche sitting in the garage...

Actually, I think its more like driving a Kia when you have a Hyundai sitting in the garage. They'll both do the job, probably not a lot of difference between them aside from personal preference, so get whichever one turns your crank...just don't expect it to turn your crank too quickly, because neither one is that exciting.

I've had several of each, still have 2 Rems and 1 Savage, and have no complaints about either brand...although I can't help but feel that Savage offers a little bit more bang for the buck.

...Do any of you CGN'rs know what Savage models i should look for? I'm only saying Savage because they're tried, tested and true...
Just get another Savage then.
Wouldn't want to see you take a leap of faith with an untried, not tested product like a Rem 700. ;)

The Rem 700 is not for you then.

Hey, there's no doubt that the 700's have a long, good history..i've just been hearing, from quite reliable/experienced sources, that they're just not up to standards these days, not only with the product, but with dodgy business...which is a turn off quite frankly. I also think that if i were to buy one (which i will eventually), i doubt that i'd have any problems with a 700 whatsoever..I just think that for my first good 'target shooting' rifle, i'll just go for the Savage. Peace of mind i guess. I mean, Flaherty's in Toronto refuses to sell them! What could be said about that?!

I own several remington's and savages. I am disapinted with remington 700's to no end! Their value is only a project gun, meaning you are going to have to replace parts. My biggest problem if feeding problems with their internal box magazines. Older models did not have this, newer models it is quite common. Remington can't or wont fix this. Bring snap caps to stores and check functionality and you'll see this is common. My Rem700 xcr tactical long range in .223 suffered from a problem where the bolt would slide on top of the top round so it would not chamber anything. The only fix is to replace the bottom metal. I have installed an Atlasworxs DBM that cured the rifle of all ills. If you intention is to shoot factory remingtons, don't. Go savage. More accurate out of the box.

I will say in remington defense that all their triggers are fine and dandy. No misfires, or otherwise not excellent triggers. To their credit the 40x trigger that came on my XCR TLR is the cats ass as long as your happy with a trigger pull over 2lbs. As a base for a project franken gun, they are fine actions with an unsurpassed aftermarket. If you want to shoot stock, or just a barrel upgrade, go savage. I have nothing bad to say about the three I own.

That's too bad really. New generation gun owners will never experience the Remington of old then.

Yep..And from all the research i've put into it so far, Savage will be getting into/producing customisation to build with. To me, the 700's are more novelty than anything. Not to take anything away from any of you 700 owners of course..i will own one myself one day.

I just bought a pair of 16.5" SPS THMZ's, one in .223 and one .308. They seem like quite decent rifles to me. The x-mark trigger is pretty decent for a factory rifle, fit and finish is basic blast and blue which I don't really mind. Action is tight and smooth. Only negative would be the forend on the hogue stock is hollow and has some flex. Nothing that I can't fix with some resin when I bed it....
Good buy in my opinion.

They are both good rifles and have a decent number of varmint/target offerings.
I'm a Remington guy and have and still own several but haven't owned and won't likely own a Savage as I just don't like them. It's a personal preference really, but for what it's worth I have never seen a Remington malfunction but have seen a few Savages malfunction. All wouldn't fire and all had AccuTriggers.
Now, if you can find a Winchester HBV or Stealth you can avoid the Remington-Savage debate and have something better.

The Savage or Sako is a safer rifle if you have a case split or rupture. If you examine the bolt design, the Savage and Sako both have a plate at the rear that will protect the shooter from a powder blast coming back through the action. The Remington on the other hand will permit the powder to hit the shooter in the eye and in the face.

I'm sure this is rare.... But I have been witness to this and it happened 4 hours from a hospital and it ended what might have been a good hunt. It didn't exactly make the day of the guy who shot the rifle either. He did not loose his eye or anything but he did have to wear a patch over his eye for a few days and put some ointment in every few hours. His face was bleeding from about 200 tiny spots where kernels of hot powder must have hit him.

The rifle was not damaged.

I personally have a Rem 700 but it is in a tube gun to provide a protective shroud for safety.

The guy with the sore eye sold both his Rem 700s and bought Sakos

If you have a Rem 700 and might be concerned about this, you could always spiral flute the bolt. That will help dissipate the pressure.

I once had a case failure in a .223 a long time ago in my Rem 700 while shooting some old Norinco 55grs FMJ and I received no injury. I felt the concussion, but that's about it. I was also wearing glasses, but I understand many don't during hunting.
She locked up tight, but I carefully got it apart and no damage to the gun. The gun still performed fine after that and I still have it.
