Remington 700VLS or Savage 12BVSS?

Terrific forum, I'm amazed at the amount of information available!

I'm trying to decide between these models in .308. Most of the reviews I've read have favored the Savage, but it seems to be a very close call. I'm looking for best design, reliability, quality, and of course inherent accuracy. From what I've read, both can be extremely accurate with some additional work.

If you had a choice, which would you choose and why?

I'm also having problems finding a dealer in BC or AB that carries the Savage. Any recommendations?
 
I'm a Savage fan, for many reasons, but you can find as many Remington fans that will say the same thing!

P&D Enterprises sells Savage, (check the top of the screen) and they have lots in stock.

If it was me, I'd go with a Savage. Of course, I'm biased, as I have 2 of their hunter series rifles (one in 30-06 Spgfd, the other in 223 Rem). Though not "tack drivers," (I hate that phrase) they are great out-of-the-box shooters. I suspect that the heavy barrel 12BVSS in 308 Win (or 223 Rem, for that matter) is probably one extremely accurate rifle.
No doubt Remington fans will say the same about their favorites.
 
This question always has a flood of replies. Everyone will have their opinion. I did not ever own a 12bvss, but I have shot one often. I have owned both a 10le2b and a vls, and the vls wins hands down. It is pretty much a crap shoot to try to determine which will be more accurate out of the box. The reality is that both will likely be plenty accurate once you reload for them. The 700vls, however, wins by a long shot in durability. I have never seen a savage in good shape after 1000+rounds. A VLS will still perform well at that point and beyond.

The accutrigger is also a big minus in my books. I can’t even imagine pulling that sharp mini trigger when it is cold out like during this mornings range session.

The savage may save you some coin getting into it, but if you are in it for the long haul, I would recommend a vls.


That said, if you count the number of posts in this thread when it is dead, it will likely be a 50/50 split.
 
+1 for the Savage

I have had both aswell, curently the Savage 10FP McMillan that I sold my 700P for, and for an out of the box rifle, the Savage is the one to get in my opinion. Now I know that you are talking about 2 differant models, but I have also shot both and both are great rifles. There is just as much after market parts and services available now for both.

It really is a crap shoot, filp a coin or if price is a consideration, I believe the Savage is the cheaper of the 2.

If I was just going straight out of the box I would go Savage model 12 bvss. Excellent rifle, that's mine in the pic real tac driver. If I wanted to have a platform for a custom rifle down the road I would go Remington. Thats just me.

Last year I shot 2000 t rds from my 12bvss with zero problems. I rebarrelled with a Broughton, removed and experimented with the accutrigger blade removed, ( 2 minute job ) and the trigger with the accutrigger blade removed is excellent.
Buy the Savage.
 
Remington for me, simply because I've had better luck with their accuracy out of the box. The savage accutrigger loved by so many drives me crazy, when i shoot somebodys savage the little springy metal flap is annoying when your trying to get a decent consistent trigger release. it's like trying to control two triggers at once. The rem trigger can be tuned/altered to be much better in my opinion than the springy spongy flap ridden contraption on a savage, they put one over on us with that thing, fiddling with that horrible thing distracts one from how bad their trigger really is. If they had a good trigger they wouldn't need that retarded gimick on it. Overall appearance wise the savage is a true ugly duckling and this affects its resale value. I've gotten rid or traded off all of my savages and don't have a single one left.

+1 for Savage.

I just bought a 12FV in .243 from Wholesalesports for around $575. The extra money saved I used to buy excellent mounts and glass- first time out I shot five factory rounds into .6" @100yds. I had been worried about quality for the price, but this is a keeper.
Love the trigger and general feel of the rifle. Very happy!
I don't own a 700 but plenty of people do- you can't go wrong with either.
 
Rem vs Sav

This question seems to keep coming back. The easy answer is which one do you see more of on this site for resale,,,,SAVAGE. You only buy a savage if you cannot afford a REMINGTON. If you view the 6BR site savage is barely mentioned.

Only becuae they don't LIKE Savages.
The 1mile record , for anyone that wants to know, is held by a 7WSM SAVAGE!!
I would not even consider buying a Remington, but own three very accurate Savage actioned rifles that are capable of winning ant competitionbI enter with them.
Buy what you want.....

I will show my bias here, I have 2 remingtons, 700vs in .308 and 700P in .223, both were outstanding out of the box, on the 700VS I had the bolt lapped and a rifle basix trigger installed, it has not had any other work done. Here is what it will do after ~ 1200 rounds... and counting.

Thanks for all the informative responses. My apologies if this is a rehashed thread- my question wasn't so much about Rem vs Savage as it is about the two specific Varmint models.

So far, it's a 5-all tie. To further complicate matters, the price between the two models is basically the same. :cool:

I get the sense that either model is an excellent base to start with. Savage seems to be the better out of the box, however do a little work with the Rem and it will match the Savage... do some work to the Savage and it will surpass the Rem, and so on. It sounds like I can't go wrong with either model, especially when taken to their full potential. It also sounds like the design and quality of both are comparable... both will get the job done. It comes down to personal choice... like Chevy vs. Ford, or Linux vs. Windows.

Off topic- I live in the lower mainland BC, and the nearest outdoor range is in Port Coquitlam, where the longest range is 300M I believe. Does anyone know of a longer range within a *few* hours drive of Vancouver? Possibly in Washington state?

I thought the "L" in VLS meant that it was a lefty model. :confused: ....


anyhow, I thought I would break the current tie and say that I have an FVSS that is the cat's ass. Apparently the people's choice in Savages' is the BVSS because of the laminate stock.. but I didn't like it. I am replacing the synthetic stock of my FVSS with a Boyd's vented laminate instead.
 
I had (sold) a 700 VLS .308 that was a consistent 1/2 MOA shooter (with hand loads) after the barrel was free floated and the action was glass bedded. I currently have a .308 700 LTR that also shoots consistent 1/2 MOA ... only things done to this one was to reduce trigger weight and mess a little with the torque on the gaurd screws.
