I have been doing some research for a scope mount for my newly aquired remington 700 (thanks Dennis!), and I have a question in regards the difference in height of the receiver bridge height.

There is a difference of .017" from the rear and front bridge as shown in the Remington blueprints for an early 700 action (serial #130 ###, no letter prefix)

I was wondering if the Remington 721 has the same dimensions as the early action Remington 700. i.e. the lower .017" in the rear bridge.

I read in one article that the height of the rear bridge was changed in 1974.

So, I guess 700's up to 1974 had the lower rear bridge like the 721/722's.

I've dragged home more than one early 700 with a one piece base made for a newer rifle.....when you remove the rear screw the base straightens out and lifts off the rear bridge...must be he11 lining up the rings like that...

Hey Rembo, the incorporation of the anti-bind bolt caused Remington to change the height of the receiver bridge. This change was incorporated in 1974.

As I know the issue you are speaking of will occur with ALL new style mounts, I was thinking of re-drilling a 721 base to fit onto the rifle, hoping that it had the same deminsions as the pre 1974- 700. I want to find a base with the extra .017" on the rear end. I suppose I can shim and bed the rear end of the scope base, but I would rather have the 'era correct' mount.

I just bought the equivalent long action... serial number 80,###. A 30-06 ADL with a 20 inch barrel.

Guesses on it's age? 1962, 63 ? As much as I like 700's I don't have the dates...
