Remington 725 mystery

Hoping for a Remington expert to set me straight. I have been dealing with some guns left by my dad a number of years ago and you guys have provided some great advice. I have questions about a Rem M-725 in 22-250. My research shows that the 725 was only made 58-62 or 63. Remington did not adopt the 22-250 until 65. The numbers don't add up. The gun is at the cottage so I can't look at it right now, not till may 24 when we usually open. It is bugging me a bit. The only info I can provide is the caliber barrel stamp looked funny to me so I fed some rounds through and that was all good. the hole in the muzzle looks like a 22 so I touched one off and all was well there too. Extracted well and the case looked good. I convinced myself it is a 22.250. That was last fall and I left it there, now my research is raising these questions.

My dad did not go in for altered guns much he was a big factory guy, liked them orig. with there place in history, he was all about that. This gun just does not fit in. He was a big Remington guy and would have known this problem for sure. I like the gun and decided to keep it based on the caliber and now am wondering about it. Does anyone know what 22 cal. the 725 would have come in, that could have been rechambered. I understand there werent that many in 1959, 22 hornet, 22 swift. Swift to 250 seems impossible, hornet to 250 possible but would require mag well alterations. or is it possible that a 725 serial # 712500 could have cone in 22-250.

please feel free to ask me questions if I can give any more info. I will end The speculation in around 6 weeks. when I can post up some pics.

update 1959 catalog shows 222 rem. at least that fits.

As Dan says , it's a rebarrel . I may be wrong , but the 725's were never chambered in 22-250 . I have one in 30/06 that I got off of Rembo . It's a very accurate , classic rifle ......... no wonder he wants it back lol .
 
The date stamp is in front of the lug on the left side of the barrel.
The first letter is the month based on B-L-A-C-K-P-O-W-D-E-R-X . . . B for January and X for December or
B - L - A - C - K - P - O - W - D - E - R - X
1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8 - 9 - 10 - 11 - 12

The second letter is the year and the years you would be interested in are in the following range:

1957_______ D
1958_______ E
1959_______ F
1960_______ G
1961_______ H
1962_______ J
1963_______ K

cam1936 You could be right. He was into calibers later in his life and 22.250 was one of them. But out of over 700 pieces he had this is the only one found that was smithed up. Weird,
 
The 725 came in three sizes of bolt faces but not chambered in 22-250... if the barrel stamps indicate Remington and 22-250 it was re barreled with a Remington barrel after it left the factory. Skillfully done it would not have to appear to be 'smithed up' as you put it... it could look just like the factory did it...
 
Hi gang I have an update on my 725. I have not been there but my brother was and he said the barrel marks are as follows. He said "&" I think It was an anchor BH12. He also commented that the caliber stamp looks bad. Would a smith stamp a new caliber right over the old one? Does anyone know what the standard trigger pull would average on a 725. Brother said the trigger felt quite light, is this model adjustable? I should have my hands on it soon to post some pics.
 
I have seen some bad restamping...the options are file off old cal, ### out old cal, or stamp over if it will be legible. My brother in law has a 358 norma with nasty ### over the old 358win stamp. It's actually stamped 35 Belted Newton(same thing just more exotic sounding name)

Sorry about the model # picture but it is clearly a 725.
I am leaning to it was probably 308 rifle with a 725 barrel chambered from 222 rem to 22-250. As mentioned it has a light trigger that is ribbed. Nice gun cant wait to put it on paper. Opinions please. Seve
