Remington 740/742/7400 mag problems??

Could someone take a minute and explain exactly what the problem is with the mags for the 742/7400/750.

I read all over about good mags and bad mags, but I'm not sure what makes each the way they are. something about the lip on it

I snapped a couple pics of my two mags. these have not been shot yet by me, but the previous owner claimed no issues. The mags show a couple metal on metal marks, but I'm not sure if they are supposed to be there. Although it seems quite obvious to me that they should not be making such severe contact as to machine away at the mag. I do not see any corresponding marks inside the receiver, but I have not dissassembled it.

I don't know if looking at them tells you. Fire the rifle and note any diference in function between the two. My dad's 742 had a weak spring that wouldn't push up a round. The bolt would close with an empty chamber. I remember hearing the lips can get bent down if the mag was rammed into the rifle all the time. Those mags appear in good condition, try them out.
 
Looks like the bolt is hitting/rubbing when the last round is being ejected...

What cartridge are you shooting?
 
Those marks are caused by the mag nose being forced up into the bottom of the barrel shank/locking lug area. That area projects back and is just above where the front of the mag catchs/latches. If someone is slapping the mags home, or nosing them in hard it will damage that area, as the bottom of the shank is somewhat abrupt.
I wouldn't be concerned with those marks, but would check the shank area just to make sure no damage is present (which I would highly doubt).
 
thanks guy, but I'm not concerned with my mags. All I can read about these guns is that "They've got mag problems..." and such. I'm just wondering what in general, is the problem with the mags.
 
Some have failure to feed issues like any mag for handguns/rifles...

I have 6 or 7 almost new mags for the 742/7400/750 30-06 action length rifles one does not feed very well all of the others work perfectly, I just don't have a rifle to use the mags in any longer sold it. :p

I still have the failure to feed mag as well I just marked it and set it aside probably throw it out some day.
 
My dad always hit his with the heel of his palm to make sure it was latched. It never came unlatched, but always jammed. My uncle was always careful putting his mag in, but one fell out one day when he was trying to shoot a buck. Seeing as the first round failed to chamber, the buck walked.
Can you tell yet I have no use for these rifles?

Dirty mags, which then bind, (crud, crap, dirt, debris) all in the mag and the owner never cleans then, then the follower jams or binds.
The second one is feedlips cracking, bending, splitting, etc, which is usually best remedied by a new mag.
