So, I've recently purchased a Remington 742 "previously enjoyed" and it refuses to fire the auto fed round. It strikes the primer lightly on the auto fed round, but not enough to fire. I've ran 147, 165 and 180 grain rounds with the same results, 4 different magazines. I cleaned the rifle from top to bottom in hops 9 until the rags pulled clean and oiled the living day lights out everything that moves. If I pull the charging handle back to just before ejection, nothing. If I eject the round and drop the hammer. Boom. The rifle is in relatively good condition and I like it. I just need to figure out why it's light strikining. Any help would be appreciated.

Are the locking lugs for the bolt burred? Gas ball hanging up? Did you take the carrier and firing pin apart and clean them?

Thanks for the response Royzo,

Everything seemed ideal, I just took out my trigger assembly and noticed the trigger disconnector was on the wrong side of the trigger latch, 99% sure that was my issue.

has the trigger been disassembled at some point? if it has possibly it wasn't put back together correctly. I had this issue where the gun would only fire by manually loading the chamber. the disconnector was on top of the lever. should be as in pic

Smokeeter,

That's exactly what happend. I don't know how to post pics from my iPhone. But I took the exact same picture yesterday. The disconnector was on the wrong side, I played with it for a bit and I just couldn't figure out what it did through the cycling of the rifle, then I put it on the other side and it was obvious. I'll push a few down the pipe this weekend and let you know how it goes.
