Remington 742 .308 - Your Thoughts

I understand those clunker semis are popular on PEI with the gangsta wanabes.

No old man 99s or whalens up in this here house :50cal:

I had a 742 in 308. It never jammed on me and I used it a lot. My only complaint was that mine was not at all accurate, but it was reliable. I traded it for a M1 garand so I did ok.:)

Based on a very limited sample size of 1, I'm not a fan of the 742/760 series. Far too many years ago as a lad of 14, I ended up choosing a 760 in .308 Win as my first big game rifle, which in retrospect was a terrible mistake. The reason was what had to be the WORST trigger in the history of firearms. I'm not exaggerating when I say there was probably close to 2/10s of an inch of unpredictable, spongy drag before the thing went off. Sadly, I was too young to know any better and got off to a pretty bumpy start before realizing that just about anything had a better trigger and could be shot more accurately.

Don't know if mine was an out-of-spec disaster or just par for the course -- but either way, once I discovered the joys of the bolt action, I never looked back ;)

Nothing wrong with 742 autoloaders. I currently own a .308 carbine and previously had a .30-06 and .270. Keep them clean and feed them decent ammo and they are fine. Mine had a hard time digesting the cheap low end Winchester and Federal ammo but function great with Supreme and Rem Corelokt. $300.00 is a great deal in my opinion.

They can be re-worked into a pretty decent trigger. I just had Guntech do one for me and am quite pleased with it.

Don't bother with the 742; you already have a better rifle. You would be better served by putting the $300 into reloading equipment so that you can become more proficient with the rifle you have.

Any 742 that has been used a significant amount will eventually wear out the bolt guide rails in the receiver and will malfunction, if it doesn't already. Also, parts are no longer readily available.

This should give you an idea of the problems with these rifles:

If you really want a .308 semi auto, get a Norinco M14.
