Remington 742 .308

I've been told that they are hunter friendly rifles that are close to the Winchester 100 model. I believe there is one that is for sale on Firearms Canada for 300.

I would rather a Winchester 88.

I have one in .30-06 that has killed a couple semi loads of moose. :D
It loves Remington Core-Lokt ammo and gets fussy real quick with anything else so keep that in mind if you have problems cycling. Guys tend to love or hate these rifles and I love mine. Good luck!

I've heard similar stories about them liking core-lokt ... I owned a 30-06 742 that I had the pleasure of it jamming on me while on full assault of a moose - hadn't heard of it at that time and I was running something other than core-lokt.

These guns can be fussy. Make sure you inspect it thoroughly before buying it. I would not buy one of these without test firing it to see it cycle. You will have to keep it very clean if you do decide to buy it and stick with ammunition it likes. Personally, I'd get a 760.

I had the chance to buy a 742 woodsmaster .308 carbine for $300. Good shape, but I decided not to. I heard some stories of them jamming. If I ever had that gun jam on me while shooting at a moose or deer I would throw it right into the swamp. I would be super pissed. I'm sticking to my tried and true bolt action, That I know wont screw up.

I had one for about 3-4 months. Used it for one season and sold it off. It was a fun little firearm; put 2 boxes of federal and Remington through it without a problem. Mine just happened to be a little to beat up for me to like it (purchased it that way). It wasnt the most accurate bugger but I enjoyed it.

I had one of the first models [740] in 30-06.
Shot a fair bit of game with it. Never gave me any grief.
It loved the Winchester factory 180 Silvertip loading.
Moose never stood a chance! lol

The only ones that really gave issue if you kept them clean at all were the batches that were produced with the soft rails. I thought they were all 742 Those I don't care how well you took care of them it was just a matter of time before the bolt jammed and you were screwed. I cannot remember that far back but some may have been even recalled. Unfortunately today no one seems to know what serial numbers were effected and remington just wants to forget it ever happened but it did. It is a hard call today since what if the gun only fired a box or two of shells as some did over the years. I have one here like that. It could have the soft rails I don't know.
Does anyone know how to tell them apart??
