Remington 742 cleaning and lubrication?

drill a small hole in the existing handle and put a key fob split ring on it to help with easier operation.

Hmmm.

Interesting thought... I may worry about it flailing around when firing though and knicking or scratching the gun/scope. I’m a big dude, and it’d have to be a pretty massive split ring to fit my sausage fingers in a glove.

As has been pointed out, chamber rust, corrosion and pitting are killers for these rifles. They are very popular in my area and I cut my teeth in the early years working on them.

I think it was Elmer Keith that said to clean the receiver and components with gasoline and use any lube sparingly. Today, we have much better options. I've use military ammunition as well as hunting ammo in my 308 for a long time. A good cleaning bares everything down to the metal then it gets Teflon dry lube only where needed. Chamber get special attention to be as smooth as possible. The little brush that was included when new in most 742s does a fine job if not misplaced over time. I lucked out and found five spares where I use to work. Not got the "chattering" damage as of yet with this system. Hunting season sees the rifles in the vehicle overnight so there is no build up of condensation day after day.
