Remington 742 issues

I have a Remington 742 in 6mm and the plastic dust cover broke. After a few hours of cursing I got it apart, put the new part in and have it together. Out to the range and now nothing but failure to extract. If I have 2 shots in a row that's the best it'll do. Could the extractor be broken from it jamming up when the plastic piece broke? Worth replacing it? Anyone with similar issues? Any info would help.

if you look hard enough, you may be able to trade it off for a s/a shot gun

You have had it apart... take it apart again and inspect it... make sure the chamber is clean... you can polish the chamber lightly with 320 grit wet/dry paper.
