Remington 742 - need advice

Is the bolt guide issue people talk about the reason that the 6mm and 280 Remingtons were loaded to lower pressures? Tacit admission by Rem that it was a known issue from the get go?

Periodically I want to buy a 742, am I nuts?

No but I would look for a 7400 first. I had them in 280 and they were fine and I never reloaded my 280 any different

I have been burned twice on model 742 purchases. I like the gun but would look to the 7400 for less grief. Lesson I have learned THOROUGHLY inspect inside and out any 742 or 7400 for that matter chambered in .308 Winchester. The two purchases that screwed me around both had been fed 7.62 nato surplus and completely ruined the gas systems. I have often thought about getting a 7400 in .243 Winchester but I find the weight of the rifle is just a little heavy for a gun that is supposed to be handy. Cleaning the gas port/valve and the little detent ball is good business also.

Bought mine in 1977, thoroughly cleaned every year, still works great,no chatter on rail, amazing what a little lubrication can do/ prevent. Have had that spring out a time or two, never had that much trouble getting it back together.

The spring is a specific length for a specific reason, however the firearm may or may not still cycle. But if it was me I’d get a new spring.
Guns are like women- if you take good care of them they will re- pay you 2fold.
