Remington 742 questions...please answer

I just checked, I have three mags all work nicely in the good 742, and when inserted you can pull the action back and it will lock leaving the breech open. In the non-working one all three mags insert but the action will not lock in the open position and thus closes. .... so the mag lock must be damaged. I guess to make sure I can swap trigger blocks .... but I am pretty sure the latch on that 71 is skewed or bent.

The mag catch may not be damaged, it may just not hold the mag high enough in the mag well to have the bolt engage the follower, which also may prevent feeding. I was told by Remington, some years ago, that the catches are numbered as they are of slightly different lengths for fitting.

check inside of receiver alot of times bolt tends to cut grooves in receiver if this happens she either locks open or shut solution new reciever or use gun for large paper weight for your firearms forums

Just want to mention also check the port cover. These are plastic and will crack and must be replaced. If it is not there, it will cause jaming and cause great wear on the receiver. I agree you may need a .308 magazine.
