I have carried a 742 or 760 or variations thereof since 1975.
I have owned at least a dozen of them.
The 742 is an awe inspiring gun. Keep it clean. The older ones were a little sticky, a little tight at times but never failed me. Remington changed the lockups in about 1980, much smoother operation now.
The only problems i ever had was on the range with the auto cycling. And ALWAYS, it was the fault of the magazine. Of 10 mags tried, 2 would give me probs. If you ever have a cycling problem, try another mag.
Currently carrying the 760 carbine. I am a bush dogger.
