Remington 750, a good idea?

So on the weekend I was in whole sale sports holding both rifles, the remington and the bar. I just couldn't decide tho... Went home and did even more reading.

I have one more question to the fella's that have the remington. Do you use full metal jacket, hollow points, or lead tip ammo? A lot of reviews say FMJ cycles just fine but the other types of ammo jam a lot. Any advice I can rely on? Is this true, or is a guy who never cleans his gun writing terrible reviews?

I'm usualy the guy with the over the top rifles and gear, but for as often as I plan to use this rifle (once or twice a year) I don't think I want to spend the extra dough for the BAR. Hate to sound cheap. I'm Usualy tagged out in muzzle season.

My M750/35whelen cycles both RN and soft point spitzers just fine - factory and handloads.

Second rem semi for me and never used fmj yet. No issues with feeding reliably. It's a hunting rifle. FMJ are for going to war. Anyway I never seen a 35cal FMJ bullet I recall.

It's just more economic for my plans with it.
Buy your Whelen and enjoy it. It's a great old chambering, but if you reeeeeeeeeeeally wanted to be "more economic", you could just buy a 30/06 and shoot heavies in it. ;)

As much as I like 35cal rifles ( currently own or owned -> 35Rem/358Win/35Whelen/358Norma), I doubt you'd see much difference between the Whelen and '06 on similar game with similar bullets.

Quit being so sensible, but perhaps correct. The only concern I might have is the gun being possibly more regulated for popular weights, so perhaps 220's in an 06 may not work the best. That said I know next to nothing about autos.

May be your mileage my differ - but I think I see a difference and have hunted with both. 35s stop stuff better IME. A 30cal bullet never is a 35 - even if similarly made. There is a whopping 35% increase in bullet's frontal area and bullet is heavier as a rule. Bigger/heavier makes a difference on terminal performance usually.

Just how I see it.

Another experience - I recommended a 30-06 to my son a few years ago because he moved away and doesn't handload. It works fine of course. However with 180s he's told me he definitely sees whitetails clinging to life longer (three taken with his new rifle at last count) than when using one of the old man's 35s with 250s.
