Remington 750 nut size

My buddy has a Remington 750 that he bought last year. He tried to strip it down for a good cleaning, but there is one nut or bolt that he cannot remove because it is an odd size.

He has tried every size of metric and Imperial wrenches and sockets and everything is just too big or too little.

Is there a special tool/socket for this? Where can he find it?
 
I suspect it's the nut holding the barrel to the receiver, I modified an existing spanner that was slightly too small ( don't recall if it was an SAE or Metric) I just filed the jaws a little to fit the nut. I think I had to make them a little thinner also .
 
I believe it is the one holding the barrel to receiver. I haven't seen the fastener in question, but he did mention he wanted to remove the barrel to give it a good cleaning,
