I would hazard a guess it was manufactured in Sept. of 1960

At least that old if not older that forend lug was used back then. Carbine lenght is good I have two 30-06 shot a lot of moose and deer with them. My first carbine was a 308 cost me $150 new back in the seventies shot my first buck with that gun sold it to a buddy who shot some monster bucks with that gun he stilll has it. The 760 grows on you a most shoot as well as a good bolt action. you didn't steal it but in todays market but you did OK

My dad has hunted with a 760 rifle in ‘06 since just after high school. It’s a killing machine (so is he), and has taken a few deer, a lot of Elk and a good part of the moose population of NW Alberta plus countless predators and other critters. He loves that rifle, and I do too. It reminds me of him and all the good times hunting with him whenever I see it at the farm.

They are fast, not called the ‘Mennonite Machine Gun’ for nuthin’.

Apparently there was a period in the 50's where some were
D & T and some were not, and by the 1960's all were.

In the Shooter's Bible for 1954, Remington makes a distinction between the 760A and the ADL in that the ADL has a "high comb stock for use with telescopic sights; receiver drilled and tapped for telescope mounts". Sounds like in the early days some were and some were not.

My dad had a 760 he bought new in 1955. 35 Remington, it was factory drilled and tapped at factory. Started factory drilling just before that I think. His had no checkering but stock had open sight drop at heel. I've seen straight stocked 760's and 742's(sorry, 740's) both from the 50's.
You did well on the purchase. Any older style 760 carbines I've seen in the last couple years have been priced $800 to $1200 depending on condition.

$600 is for a 760 carbine is the absolute deal of the week. Can't beat the old production 760's. Have several. My go to is a custom 760 in 338 federal. Shoots things even when they try to hide behind willow bushes and small poplar trees. The ultimate bush hammer. I think we need to start a 760 vs Lever guns thread.
