Hi,

I am looking at the Remington 770 .30-06 rifle for hunting deer.

this is the only rifle I could find that was fairly cheap under $400 and has a scope with it. I am wondering if anyone has used it and has an opinion on this gun.

Also this would be my first gun as well.

Thanks.

5 years ago, the 770 was the only option if you wanted a scoped rifle for around $400. Now there are better options as mentionned above. Savage Axis being one of the better ones.

where is a good place to see/buy the axis rifle.

any where near Coboconk Ontario? I live in Ottawa but would like to keep the rifle at the cottage, so I guess the closest is Lindsay Ontario.

Hit the EE for a great used rifle.

I looked through the EE section and considered it but I am not experienced enough to see what a well taken care rifle looks like or how to fix/take care of an older rifle that has been used a lot.

The vast majority of used rifles shown on the EE are perfectly servicable. Outside condition(unless refinished) usually reflects inside condition. You can pick up a real nice Remington 700(older production), Ruger 77, Winchester 70 etc. complete with scope and mounts for around $550 or so without too much trouble. These rifles take one hell of a lot of shooting to wear out, we are talking thousands of rounds(with proper care) before accuracy starts to fall off. Only a tiny percentage of shooters do this much centerfire shooting. And those who do so will look after their rifles. Enlist a friend or co-worker who is more knowledgeable to help you look. Most gun people(me included) are delighted to help someone get geared up for hunting. To me, a good used rifle is a much better value than a new production economy priced rifle. Just my 2 cents.

Don't be fooled by the 'free' scope. There is a reason they give it away with the rifle, only worth $29.

The Marlin XL7 and XS7 is another option to throw out. I'm on my second. Only reason I sold the first cuz it had a camo stock on it that I didn't like.

They are great shooters and offer lots for an entry level rifle. Comes with a good trigger, nice pad, weaver style base and a safety in the same place and function as a Remington.
