Remington 770?

I have one and it shot like a pile of garbage. So i replaced the scope with a bushnell elite 3200 that i got for free from a buddy and now it shoots a heck of alot better. I took it to the range last thursday to sight in the new scope and i was shooting three shot groups into a quarter sized hole at 100yrds. Its a cheap gun but with a better scope it would be fine.

I have heard mixed reviews about them but anybody I have talked to that has had one says with a better scope for someone big game hunting 1 or 2 times a year they arent a bad rifle. One other thing I heard was that the barrels are pressed on not threaded so if you are planning on fireing hundreds of rounds a year its probably not for you.I have a savage axis in .243 and after putting on a better scope they are also a good cheaper little rifle.

Col.,

Please forgive my ignorance- the issue with the pressed barrel is that it can't be replaced is that correct?

When you say hundreds of rounds per year, you're talking an 'every trip to the range' type of thing right? If I put a hundred or whatever rounds through it getting it zeroed and settled and all those good things then a few each year before hunting season, then whatever I shoot, I'd be OK?

yes with a pressed barrel it cant be replaced, dont get me wrong you will be able to shoot a lot of ammo before burning out a barrel but when I say hundreds of rounds I mean going out a couple times a month and firing say 4-5 boxes of shells in a sitting.I know guys that do this and have burnt out barrels but they are also using extremly hot reloads.Yes I think for what you are planning on using it for it would last you a lifetime.

Don't own one myself, but 3 guys at work have either Savage or the Remingtons. 3 different opinions there from them.

They're all package guns. One Savage in 7mm-08, owner loves it, has hunted moose elk and deer with it for years with no problems, still has the factory scope. He's also a firearms instructor.

Second fellow has a 770, in 7mm-08. New to hunting, wanted a low-cost entry rifle, has shot a deer with it and has no complaints so far. He's not happy with the scope, and has already arranged for Mrs. Claus to put a Bushnell 3200 under the tree.

Third fellow bought a 770 in 300 Win Mag. His first shot on a deer, the scope blew up. Literally in pieces. Took it back to Wholesale and the guy behind the counter says: "I will not put the same replacement scope on here, 'cause you're gonna be back in a day or two. I'll give you cash against a better scope instead." Still no reports on how the rifle functions.

My first deer rifle was a brand-new Savage package deal 6 years ago in 30-06. Before I shot anything other than paper targets with it, I had to put on a new recoil pad, because the tractor-tire tough 1/2 inch thick deal gave me the worst flinch of my life inside of a box of shells. Then I shot rings loose. Then I shot the ring bases loose. Then the front action screw. Nothing had been torqued right or Loc-tited. After one season, the reticle was shot loose and wouldn't hold POI from shot to shot. So it got a Bushnell 3200 and no worries since.

You get what you pay for; the less you pay the higher gamble you're making. Don't expect much out of a package gun beyond a season or two, and it sounds as though heavier calibers treat those package deal scopes like rented mules; but no problems with stuff .270 or smaller, it seems.

Hope something in there helps, but at work we have a saying: "A bad day at the range is better than the best day on post" Keep shooting, and enjoy it for what it is!

It is tough to justify a 770 when you can find a Marlin XL7, Stevens or Axis for less money. I've seen the Stevens for $299 recently and the Axis for $267. Add a Weaver K4 for well under $200 and you have a really good setup that will be accurate and trouble free.

Any of these package deals the scopes are not great with bigger calibers.I have an axis .243 and the scope was fine for it with the light recoil but I did switch scopes anyway and noticed a big differance.

I would buy literally anything else BUT a 710/770. Savage Axis with scope if you want a package. Savage's reputation was built on solid entry-level packages, and they've only gotten better.

I have 770 in 30-06. It is my back up rifle to my Rem 700 BDL SS DM .270Win for hunting and must say it serves its purpose. I get 1 1/2" groupings at 100 meters with core-lokts ultra 165. I did replace the scope it came with for a 3200 bushnell 600 doa that I had laying around the house.

Here is the thing with 770 in my opinion. If you are looking to shoot a box or 2 per year or take one or two deer in a year up to 200 meters then it will do that for you no problem.

Sure the bolt and mag could be smoother but you get what you pay for.

770 has a reduced recoil so it doesn't kick like a mule even my 30-06, it feels good in my hands, very nice ergonomics, it is light in weight.

So, take it for what it is. It is a budget rifle/scope combo that won't break your bank, but it will fill your freezer same as the more expensive rifles.

Cheers,

Valczer
