I have a Remington 783 heavy barrel in 6.5 creedmoor and it shoots like garbage. I’ve tried everything from high end factory match ammo to hand loading and it groups 1.5” at 100m
I’ve made sure the barrel was free floating, bedded the action.
So here’s what is crossing my mind. Since it’s not worth anything, would I be better off getting a nice prefit barrel for it. I’d be open to chambering it in a different round, basically anything that takes a .473 bolt face. How are JC Custom barrel prefits, or any other brand that people have experience with? Thanks!

Fantastic rifle and stock combo. Get some WOLFF Rem 700 SA 24lbs firing pin springs. Cut 1/2 to 3/4" off the length and install. Retest and see if the barrel is truly crap. If yes, many barrel makers will offer prefit match barrels that will make that platform shoot superbly.

I have played with many of these actions and ALL had crap firing pin springs

Note, use a REM 783 thread and shank pattern.... not the Savage SA shank. Close but not close enough. 783 will fit in all Savage actions. Savage barrels will likely not fit in a 783

Not necessary but putting on a thicker 'precision' recoil lug when building a long range rig can't hurt.

Yes, the factory trigger can be made to be creep free...

Thanks for the info Jerry! I’m Bill Peacocks grandson, ever since he passed I don’t have anyone to ask these questions too! I have a 223 that you built actually, I got it at an auction a few years ago! Absolute Tack Driver! I have the trigger on the 783 down to a nice crisp pull with no creep, have been looking at aftermarket as well.

I do have some quotes going out for some prefit match barrels. I might be in contact with you in the new year and see what you can get.

Thanks-Josh

I've worked on some 783s. Easier to work on than say, a 700. They do have potential. When they were widely available at sale prices, they were a great diamond in the rough buy.
Investing in a new barrel might very well result in a great shooter, at a reasonable cost.

I have a 783 with a JC barrel in 6.5 Creedmore. I played with the factory barrel and could get some decent results. Then I got the JC barrels. No comparison. Everything shot well in it.

Hmm saw this rifle on GP browsing this am 😅

I have one of the early ones in .243 that I've relieved the stock around the barrel and bedded. It shoots 3/4 MOA with factory Federal ammo. Before bedding it was doing around 2 MOA. The model definitely has potential - interesting to read about the firing pin springs.

I've good a brand new Savage 110 24 inch 6.5 creed factory bbl I could sell you cheap.
Save and Ren 783 are thr same thread.
All you eill need is a,new, barrle nut.

I picked up a Savage 12FV while back in 6.5CM just to see what I could do with it stock. It was a $500 Cabella special, stock was the base plastic garbage all the cheap ones come in.
I bedded it, added a bunch of lead and silicone to the hollow butt, bedded a steel rod in the for end to stiffen that. Then I started working on loads.
A little trial and error, found it hates FL or factory ammo, little better with FL size shoulder bump, acceptable with neck sized brass.
Left to right all the same loads, same brass, primers, same powder and charge, same bullets, FL sized, Shoulder Bump with FL die, neck sized on the right. Sometimes just a little ####ing around can get the results you are after.
100m groups.

Hi Jerry
Any idea where a guy could get this Wolff spring in Canada?
