I have been looking for a cheap rifle in .223 and/or 5.56 and came across the Remington 783 heavy barrel 223. Its listed on cabelas for 499, good price. Nice and compact at 16.5 inch barrel length. Thing is, I can’t find any half decent reviews on the compact heavy barrel version. Does anyone know what the quality and accuracy are like with this rifle? I’m not expecting anything superb, just trying to get a general idea. Thanks.

I was looking for something similar so I bought one (heavy barrel). Wanted to practice handloading and such.

Last time I took it out I hit 4/5 four round groups at sub moa. I was really impressed and it was the first time I ever had that kind of result. One group was less than half moa. Im confident that I am the weakest link in the equation. This was with 60 grain Sierra handloads. This was also stock, so no glass bedding or anything. I did sand the stock down a bit since it was initially touching the barrel. Im sure it can be further improved with an aftermarket stock or chasis. If you depend on factory bulk ammo you might also have to adjust your expectation.

I would say that I'm happy with the purchase.

Got one in 6.5 Creedmoor , all under .5 in after floating barrel and trigger set lower

the barrel seems short for the 6.5cm but I love short barrels so not worried about losing a a bit of fps. Seems like a very handy rifle

I just bought the 783 (.223)with the 16” bbl. nice feel to it, lightened up the trigger and just mounted a scope on it. Definitely isn’t a floating barrel but I’m going to shoot it before modifying the stock. My experience is some rifles actually shoot well with a stable pressure point. We’ll see. My first .223 so lots to learn with this little round.

I am looking for a bolt .223 / 556 also.

I think I am going to go with the Mossberg MVP varmint, or something along those lines.
Two main reasons for this: I already own a few LAR-15 10/10 mags, and I also want something chambered in 5.56 , not only .223

Anyone have any feedback on these rifles? I am looking for my first bolt action. I would love to put those LAR mags to use in a BA rifle. the .223 vs 556 chamber is not a real deal breaker, but shooting the AR, I will shop where the ammo sales are.
