I know I know. A 783 in the precision section. Hopefully I won't be raked over this one in here, but it seems more fitting than the hunting forum.

Anyone have one of the new 783's with the short heavy barrel? Just came across them online and ordered one. 308, heavy 16.5" barrel, threaded muzzle, 1-10 twist, FDE stock as the only color option, and the best part... New bolt handle instead of the gaudy flat 'R' branded one.

They also come in 6.5 creedmoor, 223 rem, and 300 blk.

I've had a few 700's and currently have a police in the safe. But at half the price of an AAC-SD, seems like a no brainer. Will end up starting as a hunting rifle with a Vortex Viper HS 4-16x50, but I can see it turning into a cheap project.

Anyone give me a review as I wait for it in the mail? Found next to nothing in way of a review/youtube vid online as they only came out a few months ago.

Pics for reference!

The gunsmiths locally here who have an open mind and have looked at these 783's objectively are really impressed with them. Claim the machining is done extremely well and precise. The trigger is a good one right out of the box. The only issue was the mentioned bolt handle being ugly. I wouldn't worry about the "name" and use it. I like the fact you can change the barrel easily. A couple people have built very accurate match rifles using them locally.

Most of the detractors I have read on here are all connected to gunsmiths whose business is selling extremely high priced match rifles and are afraid of an action that works well priced at the 783 level.

Fair enough! I've actually had a 783 prior but sold it to help fund other builds. I really did like it with a few downfalls, one being the bolt handle, and another being the plastic built in sling swivels. Now with that being said I trucked that rifle thru the bush in -30 hunting and examined the 'studs' after with no complaints.

Also dare I say the action was smoother than my 700 I had at the time...

It should make a good platform for the price, especially considering the specs on it.

Where did you pick this up from? I have been waiting for these to show up since they were announced. Thanks

Latulippe out of Quebec. They have them for $480 plus a $20 oversize charge but free shipping. At the time they only had 4 308s (now 3 after mine) and one 223. No 6.5s left in stock. Reliable in Vancouver and elwood epps also only have 308s. Those seem to be the only stores I could find that carry them.

To me a rem 783 is as much a precision rifle as a savage 10.
And right now, i can shoot 25 rounds in a row sub 1/2 moa with a savage 10 (installed a match ibi barrel)

If ever MDT would show support for the rem 783, id get one, drop it in a chassis, swap barrels myself with the savage style barrel nut and headspacing, and take it out for a go.

Got to love easy headspacing savage style prefit barrels.

Well MDT does have one for the 783! Only the LSS currently, but better than nothing. I'd like to see at least an LSS-XL version to get the forend out a little farther. But at least that's a start!

A good start
I currently own the ESS on my savage 10
And is now my go to chassis
Ergonomics around buttstock and having a full free float tube in front is quite nice

If they do have a model available
It’s got to follow sooner or later in others

That's my thoughts too. Will likely wait as ill be in no rush to get the LSS.

Keep bugging MDT and other stock/chassis suppliers. Customer demand is what drives new product...and yes, they are counting the calls.

Timney just did a FB poll and voila, trigger for the Rem 783 won against other rifles. If Timney moves ahead, I would guess something announced for SHOT next year.

And so it goes.... use social media, email or good ole phone and let the manfs know you want more stuff.

There are some really cool features machined into the standard Rem 783 which have no use in its current hunting form so the engineers were thinking ahead. I am excited about this new shorty with better knob. I can only hope they are planning a chassis mag fed version but who knows with the new company leadership.

If you like the action, and want more... go bug the other manfs... including Remington. They are HUNGRY for sales so if there are a bunch of interest in something they can make easily, I bet they will be all over it.

I can already offer match grade prefits in pretty much any configuration you can dream up. The action shoots and runs extremely well from a mag fed set up.

Let us know how it shoots. I would be interested in the 308 or 6.5 version. I am happy with my current 783 for what it is so hopefully this performs well too. Price seems reasonable

I absolutely will! If the 6.5 version was in stock I likely would have tried one as my first 6.5 creed. However I'm set up to load and shoot 308 and being in stock it was a sign lol.

Good to know Jerry! I'll email MDT to inquire. I love the idea of a chassis for a shorty. Personally prefer bigger stocks for longer guns, but love the idea of a light aluminum chassis for a 16.5". Also had no idea about timney. Are they ready for purchase already? Or just a confirmed item for the future?

I read your write up about using the 783 as a platform for PRS. Very good read and loved the many photos. Keep it up!

Just re-read your post. No timney trigger YET. Lol.

The LSS will work great with the shorty set up.

if I can help, offering package discounts... PM or email.

Enjoy the rifle.

I'm actually kind of sad the 783 HB are rolling into Canada now. I just ordered my Weatherby Vanguard 223 and the 783 was actually ahead of it. My rifle will be going into a LSS it's a simple chassis but incredibly effective for what it is. And with the shorter barrel of the 783, I think it will be a perfect combination.

If I wouldn't of made a few expensive purchases lately,
I would feel like getting a shorty 783 with an LSS, to be my 200-250M groundhog (Marmotte) hunting rig
