Just took my new Remington 783 in walnut out to the range. Love the gun, got it sighted in and it’s is nice to shoot. But I did have two problems one minor and one very annoying and I think they are related. The first major issue is magazine is darn near impossible to remove. The catch is very stiff and I couldn’t get the thing open. I have the front action screw at 30 inch pounds as is called for in the manual. This resulted in loading one round at a time.

Second was some rounds hung up and were hard to chamber. It’s not a bolt issue because the bolt is smooth on an empty gun. I think it is either the magazine is stiff or the feed ramp needs polishing.

Just wanted to see if anyone else had a very hard to remove magazine on the 783 and what their fix was.

I have tried five of them over the past three years just for fun: 270, 30-06, 7mm Rem Mag, and two 300 Win. None of the had any problem like you are experiencing.
Warranty time!

Still have the 7 mag, and it is a tackdriver with an especially fast barrel. 160s at near 3200 fps with good case life and no loose primer pockets.

There was a couple of walnut versions at the LGS that were exactly as you described as per mag removal issue. My guess is it’s the mag is binding on the wood somewhere. Check for rub marks and get out the file as they are a good looking unit for the price. I have a HB shorty in .223 and have had zero mag issues.

I tried loosening the action screw but it was too loose to function well. It looks as though the mag catch is being pushed forward when I screw in the action screw causing it to jut out too much. I was considering epoxying the mag catch so it stays further back when the action screw is tight but don’t know if I want to go this route. I think the feed issue is related to the stiff mag as the magazine has no play to move when the bolt slide forward. Once the bolt gets over the lip at the back of the mag it is fine from there. It seems the bolt is getting hung up on the mag and not the round.

Maybe I’ll try shimming with a washer. I already place a washer under the rear action screw as it was way too easy to over torque the rear one causing the plastic trigger guard to pull through the screw hole. With the washer in place I can now properly torque my action screw

To be clear. Does the washer go between stock and mag catch or between the action screw and the mag catch?

Consider bringing your new rifle back to the seller so they can ship it for warranty repairs or fix it there. This shouldn't be your problem to solve. If everything with the rifle is as it should be there would be zero issues for you to deal with. Just my opinion, it's a new rifle I would bring it back and get them to fix it, good luck.

Shot my son's 783 laminate yesterday and happily there is no magazine removal issue at all. The action worked very smoothly and operated without any problems when feeding from the magazine. Feeding individual rounds by hand can be a little tricky if you don't push the rounds towards the chamber when you drop them into the receiver otherwise for me at least they tended to get caught up, not the rifle's fault instead me not yet being familiar with the action caused the problem. Very nice shooting rifle that I would highly recommend.
