Had an opportunity to shoot the new Remington 783 on the weekend and for a rifle in its price range it appears at first glance to stack up pretty well with others in that price range. Accuracy was very good although I did find the trigger quite heavy despite claims it was set at 3.5 pounds. Remington may have finally got it right with this economy offering although I guess time will tell in regards to durability. It is pillar bedded, the bolt super easy to disassemble and features a removable magazine.

Going to trade in the RMR?

I have one 30 06 trigger adjusted down easy cheap stock but very stiff and free floated very good detachable double stack magazine nothing new just good design a little heavier than the 700 in action and barrel its about time someone started moving that way instead of this lightweight stuff i really like it finish is like the sps

Is the footprint the same as a 700?

As soon as Canadian retailers start to receive the 223 and 308 chambers, I will grab one. From all the reviews thus far, this is Remington's option to compete against the Savage Axis and Ruger American lines, and also a correction to it's horrid 770 line.

Remington finally starting to come back around ya'll think? They got it right with the Versamax I don't care what nobody thinks I own one, not a armchair expert!

I fondled one in the store. Different bolt. The tupperware stock looked like it would do the job but overall it seemed a little light. The Ruger was a bit lighter still meaning it would pack a bit more whallup on the shoulder in the 30-06.

If I did not own my Parker hale and my made in the UK Midland - I'd give it a whirl.

I haven't seen or handled a 783, but given Remington's previous incursions into the economy rifle market, that is the 710 and the 770, IMHO they should just stick with what they're good at; refining and marketing the 700. The 700 is the most popular and copied American made bolt action to date, so why be distracted? That other stuff thus far has done nothing but damage the brand image.

Good to see Remington go with a Brewer type locking collar for the barrel.
I've yet to handle one yet, but after checking numerous reviews, I figure
it's a move in the right direction. The Sako type extractor is a nice
touch.

One of these in .260 Remington would be fine with me. (Along with a Boyd's laminate stock.);)

Ok, so here is a good question? If I wanted to buy a new "inexpensive" hunting rifle in 30-06, what would be the bet bang for my buck? A Savage 111, Ruger American, or a Remington 783? I personally am a Savage fan but I would like to hear other peoples opinion.

The best bang for the buck is to leave the economy rifles on the rack and look for a gently used rifle of reasonable quality. Tradex is a good source for used rifles, and their honesty and reputation for fair dealing is beyond reproach. The EE has gems from time to time, but unless you are a savvy buyer, you could get burned there. I particularly like Huqvarna's 1600 series, and Tradex should have a selection of them in .30/06. Of course if you have your heart set on Remington, you might find a 700 or a 760 pump on there from time to time, and another resource you should check out is the "Canadian Access to Firearms' a monthly buy and sell type paper that is published in Whitehorse. I saw recently that Dante's are selling the Weatherby Vanguard in .270 or .30/06 for under $420, that is perhaps the best hunting rifle deal you'll find anywhere.
