For the gunsmiths here that have worked with the 788 action:

What are your thoughts on cartridgesrs that this action would handle?

I have a 788 .308 lefty and a Carbon six 1/8 twist sendero contour 22" barrel. Plan was to go creedmoor, having second thoughts about 260 rem or PRC, but I'm not sure it would handle the slightly larger PRC, and I don't know if I want to be completely dependent on reloading.

Have any of you seen this action used to something larger than the .308 family of brass? I should probably just get it done in 6.5CM and move on, but I'd really like to get to about 2900 with a 147 eldx

mags will limit options. I would go with the 6.5 CM for ease of fitment... never get that type of speed. more like 2700fps which is still plenty good out to 1000yds+

260 Rem would be another good option but I really like the packaging ease of the Creedmoor.

Hmm, I should just stick with the original plan: Creedmoor.

I'll see what happens with reloading I guess.

Thanks for getting me that barrel by the way Jerry, it's a beaut!

I think the minor diameter of Rem 700 is about .955" and is 16 tpi. Rem 788 has a 1.000" x 20 tpi tenon. Not clear how a 700 barrel could be fit to a 788 unless cutting off old 700 tenon, turning and threading new 788 tenon and then re-chambering?

The 6.5 CM is the Best choice with the mag lenght of a 788 for Sure ! THERE is a TON of FACTORY ammo avail for the 6.5 CM Everywhere Even WAL MARTS have it ! jmo RJ
